I rate David Matthews very highly. His symphonies are excellent, but his SQs are also amongst my favourite British cycles.

Having heard his symphonies, the natural step would be to listen to the string quartets which is a form I increasingly enjoy more and more.

I don't think you will be disappointed. The previous releases have been very worthwhile.

Just listened to the Vol 6 of the String Quartets. Nos. 8, 16, 17 are first rate, as fine as any of the previous ones we have heard.

Not sure about DMs SQ transcriptions (Bach, a prelude and fugue from the 48 in this case). Perhaps he does them for the Kreutzer Quartet to play as encores, but I can't see much point in them otherwise.

Agree with all you say. More time needed with these, because as much as I come to enjoy his SQs, they take a while to root. As for the Bach, I am less interested.

What makes me wonder why the 10th was skipped. I don't know any recording of that symphony.
