Very queer but enjoyable. I liked the hypnotic atmosphere, and the very androgynous Gainsbourg  >:D

"Excellent Cadavers", a very intelligent movie about the war against Mafia lead by the judge Falcone and his assassination. Palmintieri does the judge character very, very well. Almost a documentary.

SonicMan46

Flags of our Fathers (2006) - Netflix rental - held my interest, but not as good as expected; 2*-5* ratings on Amazon w/ a 4* average (I'd probably go 3+*, i.e. like the film but did not love it) - have not read the book.

Harvey (1950) - burned to DVD from TCM - James Stewart (quite a different role from all of those great Westerns about to be made under Anthony Mann's direction) - but shows his great 'comedic' talents (have a bunch of those 'screwball' comedies from the '30s) - not great but a good 'fun' watch (and not sure if I've ever seen this film before?)  :)

Just discovered/bought Law and Order 2nd season. Very good acting, often gripping stories...television can come up with entertainment that approaches Art. You definitely have to look for it though.

Solitary Wanderer

This was an interesting look at the way the 'enemy'  ;) reports news items compared the the US media. I was especially suprised at the diverse range of nationalities the staff at Al Jazzera are made up from.

Started watching this on DVD boxset last week. Its good escapist entertainment. Not as intellectually stimulating as Boston Legal , exciting as 24 or a classic drama like Sopranos or Six Feet Under, but enjoyable nonetheless.

An old friend: Alexander Newski. Some things in it haven't aged so graciously, but there's so much in it that's timeless!

Yesterday I watched "Triumph of the Spirit", based on the true story of a greek boxer surviving in Auschwitz by entertaining the nazi officers in the ring. I watched it first when it was released in 1989, and remember liking it a lot. But on this second visit, I must say it looked dated and not really convincing. Still, Willem Dafoe is an actor I like very much and the story is interesting.

Our Sunday evening movie, and we found this French film just excellent. Highly recommended!

The only qualm I had with that one is that it was advertised as a comedy, while we both found it rather sad, even slightly depressing. (Or was it simply a bad day...??)

S709

The last interesting thing I saw was Béla Tarr's Kárhozat (Damnation).

The very slow camera motion, the constant rain and the industrial noise and the music create a sort of atmosphere of 'exquisite bleakness'. The characters all seem very empty somehow and yet have some really interesting conversations. It was somewhat strange to watch though, and I am new to this kind of thing...

It was advertised as a drama here, and when that was the expectation I found it had a lot of subtle humour as well. Sometimes it was a bit sad, but the ending was quite optimistic! And the acting was excellent.

That's amazing! I wonder how they decide these things... Probably someone here felt that a French comedy would sell better... :-\

Thanks for that description, Chris! I've never heard of that movie but I think I'll have to seek it out - sounds intriguing. :D

Yes, a very strange film based on the even stranger novel by Ian McEwan...come to think of it, all his novels are bizzare in one way or another. The guy has a very peculiar and disturbing interior life.

Charlotte Gainsbourg is an interesting actress with a quirky kind of beauty. Her mother is Jane Birkin, you know, and the kid ended up a cross between the intensely ugly Serge and her beautiful mother. Here is her family, Charlotte looking androgynous even at age two ;D
