Ben Bilirim = I know
He was a very good musician, I like most of his songs. Actually my father used to play with him in a band when they were teenagers :)
The way he died a few years back was he died of a heart attack while having sex with his mistress. The mistress called the wife to get to save him, but it was too late  0:)

I remember another song which was a big hit from the contest ( I think it was form Yugoslavia), but can't remember the name. Dany or Daniel perhaps  ???

Well in high school I was a big Dickens fan, but I hated the adaptations for tv and the big screen.  Most of them anyway.

PBS has started showing Bleak House, so I approached it with trepidation.  But nevertheless, I did give it a chance, mostly because Knight said that it was very good.

And it is great!  It captures both the dark and the comical aspects well.  And the casting is excellent.  And they're like how I imagined them to be with the exception of Krook.  I saw him as uglier, with a big nose and warts! :D  I don't know if he was described that way in the novel or if my imagination got the better of me.

Anyway I'm completely sucked in and will look forward to each installment. :)

Here is a picture for you to look at, I'm not watching it on dvd, so it's only relevant to give you a quick look at some of the stars:

Yes, that Bleak House is brilliant. Mike never steered us wrong yet, David!

Interesting choice of words...

Haxan is one classic silent film that has considerably aged. The mixture of patronising freudianism and putting down of women's "nerves" at the end is a big letdown. BUT: the first 3/4 of the film is excellent. Don't believe all the hoopla about eroticism, the film being banned all over etc. A Sports Illustrated cover is more erotic than this (if it features Anna Kournikova, that is ;D).

Milos, it's  a tragedy that you missed Dreyer's Vampyr! For decades it's been my favourite fantastic movie. There's no other that can compare. Not that it's better, but it's so different and has never been imitated. That in itself is rather strange, because the fantastic/horror genres are probably the most fertile for imitations and sequels.

"The Insider".

Very good, slow but intense, more subtle than usual. Russell Crowe surprises me for the quality of his interpretation. Al Pacino, as usual, seems to play the same character since 1980.

Campy fun.

More campy fun! I just love these '70s flicks...the music, the fashions, the cars, the lingo... :)

That is a GREAT line!
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

"Oh, MAma!" :)

I still watch the old Pam Grier flicks. Is this one bad (in the good way)? ;) ;)

"Grbavica" or "Esma's Secret" is a really great movie. It's based on the systematic rapings of women in Bosnia during the war, and the relationship between a mother and her daughter. The daughter grows up in the belief that her father was a "shaheed" (a holy war martyr), but the truth is grimmer...

Yep ;D

The black dude [Doodlebug] with the white butler was a laugh as was the OTT Shelly Winters character. Cleo drives a cool Corvette with a machine gun hidden in the door panel. All the white character are portrayed as fascist pigs. Definately a period piece.

Yup.  Despite choosing an emotionally sensitive issue, it was forgettable.  Not bad, not great, just alright.  Nicholas Cage has certainly done worse, *cough* Wicker Man *cough*. ;D
