A League of Their Own perhaps?

Not the last, saw recently. An interesting example of new Romanian cinema. A study of self-indulgence and the desire to quickly forget one's own crimes, such as the mass murder of Jews during the Romanian-German occupation of Odessa.

Quote from: Cato on August 30, 2023, 02:57:06 PMBack in the 1970's, a theater in Dayton offered a double-feature of Taxi Driver (new release at the time) with Mean Streets.

So, I attended with a friend, who later went on to become ambassador to a Caribbean island nation, and we both were enthusiastic about Taxi Driver.

After an intermission, Mean Streets came on, which, after 15 minutes, my friend found tedious and then unbearable.  I was not particularly enthusiastic about it either, so we left.

Every so often I think I should give it a chance again: 50 years can make a difference!

The film has a relentless march to the expected destination, and I mostly felt Scorsese took somewhat too long to arrive at where the audience knew he was going.  But the performances by Keitel and De Niro are so good, both very young, that the film is a pleasure to watch even with its flaws.

Evita was unexpectedly excellent.

I caught it on television. I expected to hate it. I expected to scoff. But despite my predisposition I admired it. And not just a little.

Reminds me of what the Wagner/Verdi lecturer at UB said of Mel Gibson in Zeffirelli's Hamlet: "I came to sneer and stayed to applaud."

Iota

A beautifully shot, tense and uneasy film, telling the tale of a man bringing his new wife and her son back to the family ranch, where they receive a ruthlessly hostile reception from his dominant, cowboy brother. The latter walks around like an open wound in passive-aggressive mode, progressively exposing his own and others' psychological fractures. One memorable outcome of such pathological interaction is a kind of western duelling scene, involving the somewhat atypical weapons of Johann Strauss père, a banjo and a piano. The scene where said piano is first brought to the house, seemed to me a nod to her earlier film The Piano.

The four main leads are all excellent, Jesse Plemons who plays the most passive and sane character, seems someone extremely good at shining by not shining, an intriguing presence. The film also has an unforgettable score by Jonny Greenwood, which plays an integral part in setting the tone. I shall henceforth pay more attention to films with his name attached.

Yet to see the film or hear the music, but have heard good things about both. Are you aware he's from the band Radiohead?

Haven't watched the first Austin Powers movie since I bought the BD threepack of all the movies however long ago.  Long stretches of ho hum comedy are punctuated by some hilarious moments, typically when Dr Evil is on screen, which is more or less how I remembered it.  It is also quite something to be reminded of how breathtakingly beautiful Elizabeth Hurley was at the time the move was made.

Yes, I'm far more familiar with him in that mode, than in his film score work.

I thought the sequel was even funnier.  I loved mini-me but again some of funniest moments are from Dr Evil.  I can't deny Elizabeth Hurley was gorgeous but so is Heather Graham in the sequel.

SonicMan46

Superman I & II (1978 & 1981) - have not watched these films in a long time - owned two old BDs but being offered as 4K Dolby Atmos on MAX (below) which were excellent (exception the opening scenes on Krypton in the first film were sub-standard?).  Relived some nice memories taking my young son to the big screen for both movies (and probably III & IV, of which I'm not a big fan).  Dave :)

FWIW, those first two movies are the only Superman movies I watch, too.

Dave, was your viewing of No. 2 the Richard Donner Cut or the theatrical Lester version?
