Quote from: Brian on January 12, 2025, 06:20:34 AMWow that's a good lineup!!

I'm in a phase of revisiting films I liked but haven't watched to death, especially from the 70s. (1959's Anatomy because musically I'm in an Ellington phase.) Chinatown, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Papillon and French Connection II are in queue.

I started with "a conversation" between Ed and Richard before starting the film proper.

Director Julie Taymor's commentary track.

Which had me accept and respect the decisions of visual style that seemed pretty crazy when I first saw this.

I love this movie and it's fabulous soundtrack!

Interesting you should point to that, because the dvd has a second commentary track by composer Eliot Goldenthal. And its the first time I've encountered the option of a composers commentary.

As a trombonist, I approve this funny joke and will repeat it.

What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians?
A viola player.

How do you get guitarists to turn their volume down?
Put sheet music in front of them.

Director Joss Whedon's commentary track.

Which, personally, I found much more interesting than the film itself, though it has little to say about Shakespeare and more about how nice it was to hang out with all his regular actor friends and quite a bit about filming in and around his own house.

Easily, one of the most terrifying antagonists ever in Lil Z: City of God

Absolutely amazing film (as long as you don't take it too seriously).

I don't think I even knew this film existed. Weird.

I'm not sure health and safety is much of an issue any more in the post apocolypse Mad Max world..........

This film series is so much fun!  I especially love the earnest though over the top villains.

I was very worried when they added him, and I was so glad to be proven wrong - he was awesome! 8)

Over the top? Ridiculous? Arnie? Collateral Damage!

I consider Newman my favourite actor, and yet,  despite this being a well-regarded film, I'd never seen it until now.

I went in with high expectations and it far exceeded them.

Do you remember the original Doom video game from the 1990's?  One of my favorite things about that game was the monster in-fighting, when one dummy tried to shoot you but instead hit the monster infront of him, they would get mad at each other and start fighting forgetting about you.  The over-the-top villains in the Mad Max series remind me of that.  Dumb, lots of in-fighting, like wasn't Chris Hemsworth also fighting Joe (or whatever his name was).  Pretty good fun.

David Lynch drew inspiration from the depths of his consciousness, which he accessed through the practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM). Today, I re-watched Mulholland Drive while meditating in line with the TM practice I followed decades ago. Why not? It turned out to be an intriguing experience: scattered attention, an absence of thoughts, no attempts to interpret or understand what was happening on the screen, and no focus on separate details. Two and a half hours flew by unnoticed.
