Quote from: VonStupp on May 10, 2025, 11:16:57 AMThere is plenty of that! We do not use the TV as a babysitter, nor phones or other devices. They do karate, piano lessons, and regional youth wind ensembles, as well as exploring the neighborhood on bikes. My wife is crafty (not the fox or witch kind of crafty), so there is a lot of creation and imagination in my household. I do like them to have a break just to do nothing, even if only to give their minds time off of activity.

Movie night can be special though, and giving them choices is important. We are not in the habit, however, of watching the same thing 100 times over. Usually once every weekend or so, and a discussion of themes after viewing, if necessary. :)

Excellent!   :)  Well done parents!

Last night I watched a movie about fishermen who didn't save sailors from a sinking ship because they knew everyone would starve if they saved them. They are haunted by a sea draugr.

It was captivating, short, and sweet.

Not perfect, by any means, but as any family, we try our best. :) For instance, you will never see me in the Green-Thumb thread. Alas my mother's and grandmother's fondness for gardening and greenery didn't take with me. :-[

I satisfied that curiosity.  Moving on: back when I first reeled in the Final Cut I listened to Scott's commentary. I then promptly forgot that there are two other commentaries. One, to which I've just listened, is by screenwriters Hampton Fancher and David Peoples, producer Michael Deeley and Production Assistant Katherine Haber. Both informative and thoroughly entertaining.

A lot of twists and turns on this one, Mormons knock on the wrong door. Don't watch if you can't stomach Hugh Grant as a baddie.

Hey, we all try our best...none of us are perfect.

One idea re gardening:  a lot of times gardening centers will have *classes (other sources too like community centers, Y's, etc.).  Perhaps you might take them to a couple of them as a family--it could be a fun time for all.  There are also things like wreath decorating classes which your wife and kids might enjoy?  Just some thoughts.  :)

* If you have a yard which gets a fair bit of sunshine, you might try putting in a raised bed and growing a few veggies (or a small variety of tomato in a pot on a porch) or some flowers or bulbs?  :)

Best wishes from the gardener with a semi-brown thumb,

K

This is a great idea. 👍

We have done some painting/visual art activities like you mention, but I hadn't thought of gardening. With my mother having recently passed, this might be a good opportunity to get them digging in the soil to remind them of grandma's favorite pastime.

That reminds me of the motto of the producers* of King Kong, when they were making documentaries during the silent era: "Keep it distant, difficult, and dangerous."

It isn't the first time, but it's been a while: Terry Gilliam's commentary upon Brazil. "Everybody loves the word hommage, but stealing is more like it." Separately, Woody Allen has Tony Roberts make the same pivot in Stardust Memories.

We were just talking about our favorite Woody Allen movie!

Not written by Woody Allen, but absolutely written for Woody Allen!

Great fun, very witty, and it has Christopher Walken, Gene Hackman, and Sylvester Stallone!

This will appall our @SonicMan46 (and perhaps others) but I'm now watching Key Largo for the very first time.

Predictably great stuff. It hinges on another blindspot, we might say: this may be the only movie I've seen with EG Robinson in Mobster Mode.
And now, the commentary by futurist Syd Mead, Visual Effects folks headed by Doug Trumbill & al. on Blade Runner.
