Quote from: SimonNZ on May 17, 2025, 03:41:20 PMFor me the Antonioni film that gets that kind of praise would be the one he made immediately after. How do you rate L'Eclisse?
L'Eclisse didn't make such a strong impact when I watched it. But, as La Notte was the first Antonioni film I ever watched, I was blown over by the style. That "novelty effect" was no longer there  with the subsequent film. I will revisit it soon, though, to reassess my opinion.

I watched Oddity, which had an incredibly obvious mystery but also was a well-done horror/suspense film.

Third or fourth viewing of this gentle delight.

Hong Kong is a remarkable city, full of its own unique and unmistakable atmosphere. Some films, in my view, capture that feeling beautifully. Love in a Puff is one such film, I watched it with real pleasure.

The High and the Mighty (1954).  Early "large cast of stars in peril" movie, this time a Hawaii to San Francisco commercial flight experiences engine trouble.  Movie is uncomfortably dated and not recommended.  However watching it I was intrigued with obscure but compelling actress Doe Avedon (1925-2011) and looked up her biography on IMDB and was struck by this excerpt:

"... (I)n 1952, she was driving near Denver, Colorado with her newly wed second husband, actor Dan Matthews, when their car hit a patch of ice and skidded off the road, flipping over.  Matthews was decapitated but Doe was unhurt yet trapped in the car for hours until help came. She was traumatised by the incident and felt guilt for many years".

That is funny because I just rewatched that insane opening to the movie last week.

Agree, this version is MUCH better than the David Lynch attempt from 40 years ago. The liberties they took with certain details (e.g. making Liet Kynes female) don't bother me at all, the film as a whole is so faithful to the feel of the book. My only criticism would be that I didn't think Timothee Chalamet really worked well as Paul Atreides in the first part, but he was much more convincing in the second.

Quote from: Kalevala on April 15, 2025, 11:05:53 AMRed 2 starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and others.  How to describe it:  spies trying to save the world with a lot of tongue in cheek humor?  Lots of fun and interesting twists.  Quite enjoyed it.  John Malkovich's character and delivery had me laughing.

I should have guessed that this is a sequel. Have you seen the first movie, K?

Yes, it was a while ago.  From what I remember, I enjoyed it.  :)

Will be, at my end, re-watching one of the Mission Impossible movies soon.

Great fun! They prompted me to dig into the original TV series. I'm in the middle of Season 6.
