Utterly gorgeous. Kalatozov's camera (Urusevsky) is one of rare that can match Ophuls, shot for shot. Story is simple, love story interrupted by war, classic melodrama. Cinematography is beautiful beyond description but not for just for itself, Kalatozov manages to make it work for film, check first five minutes and tell me if I'm wrong:

Samoilova is wonderful as female lead, and very cute (looks like Bjork's prettier sister)

Needed only the first minute to know I need to watch it. :) Oddly, Netflix has him listed under both Kalatozov and Kalatozishvilli.

He is Georgian, so Kalatozishvilli is his real surname, Kalatozov is russified version but the one he himself used and the one he is wide known under. Don't think many are going to search for his films under Kalatozishvilli.

And Kalatozov knows it.

Cute. Fun.

This DreamWorks stuff has never appealed to me, no matter how well it is done.  :(

By the way, I'm giving curmudgeon lessons.  ;)

I'd be surprised if it did.

Yeah, it seems like their idea of creating something that "the entire family will enjoy" is to pack in as many irrelevant pop culture references for the adults and to balance it with a lot of fart jokes to keep the kids interested. The Disney/Pixar movies (esp. Ratatouille) seem to achieve the same end with charm alone.

Well, I've seen several 'young adult' romantic comedies recently (fortunately rentals that I never made it to the end, but which were recommendations by some reviewers) that involved a lot of scatological humor often w/ verbal & auditory 'flatus' references -  ;) ;D   Maybe just 'grown up' kids?

However, I did see Monsters vs. Aliens - enjoyed but no interest in a purchase - my last purchase of an animated film was Ratatouille; next one will be Up, when released - hmm, both Disney/Pixar -  :)

Ratatouille is a masterpiece. I haven't seen Up yet, but of Pixar's movies so far, I think Ratatouille is my favorite.

Harry

The last two days I saw these films, and I liked them all, especially The Ramen Girl, with this stunning beauty called Brittany!

And this one with a very young Julia Ormond....

Johnny Mercer - a TCM documentary by Clint Eastwood that appeared last night on the Turner Channel - just excellent and amazing 'how many' songs/writers that he contributed the lyrics!  Copied to my DVR, so may 'burn' a DVD later - unfortunately, just an hour - could have watched more -  :D

I was bowled over by his number and quality of songs. That was truly the golden age of popular music.

I enjoyed Constantine a lot more than the typical reviews suggest; (Metacritic = 58, though a lot of these are from video game reviewers  :-\ ).  Not Keanu Reeves' acting of course, but the story's concepts resonated.  I loved 'Satan' as played by Peter Stormare, and Tilda Swinton as 'Gabriel'.

Yes, it was very good.

In general, the comics are better.

Susan & I just returned from a long weekend trip to Richmond, VA - just 4 hrs up the road - love to stay @ the Jefferson Hotel & sample their fabulous Sunday brunch (will report soon in the 'eating thread'!).

But of course, there is much American history in that state, both involving the American Revolution & the American Civil War - so stimulated me to watch both a documentary (will finish tonight) & a movie that I enjoy:
