George,
I'm a little in mourning that Natalie Portman is engaged/preggers. But my celebrity crush had already transferred over to Anna Kendrick (who's closer to my age anyway) when I saw Up in the Air, so the disappointment is more nostalgic than anything else...  ;D

I've only just discovered "Royle Family," a late '90s BBC sitcom, but it's fast becoming my favorite non-Arrested-Development comedy .....

I guess the conservative persecution complex should no longer amaze me, but it still does.

To put it another way, David, you're assertion that Matt Damon is a bigot is bollocks.

A difficult film to watch: plenty of unpleasant sex and violence.  But the most interesting film I've seen in a long time.

False.  He made it quite clear two years ago in an interview on CBS TV.  See for yourself: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4435771n

Oh! And "The Lateness of the Hour" & "Night of the Meek" from season 2 of The Twilight Zone.

Did you see an Evening (or was it Night?) to remember? I loved that movie.

A Night to Remember . . . I don't think I've seen it in its entirety, but yes, another thoroughly charming movie! (Near as I can judge . . . .)

Seems that every day I see more praise for this flick.  Guess I ought to see it one day.  I was put off since it's presented as a "true story" but has been criticized for playing fast and loose with the facts.  I know it's old fashioned to be disturbed by that, but I'm an old fashioned guy.  ;)

I really didn't see anything bigoted going on there, but maybe I'm blinded by agreeing with nearly every word. Probably material for another thread...

I also agree with nearly your every word, about Social Network. I'm bothered by the "true story" angle when they did obviously make stuff up, like the girlfriend at the start who prophesies Z's doom, and I'm also bothered by the fact that it just does not sound like good material for a Great Movie. Will have to see it, though. I'll go into the movie with an open mind and try to watch it as a fictional story on the screen, rather than as a representation of anything real.

Not unlikely.  People are often thus blinded.

In this case Damon's bigotry is glaring.  He says at the outset that he knows nothing about Palin (although he obviously knows a little, most notably that she had just been named for the VP slot on the GOP ticket).  Yet his admitted ignorance scarcely impedes him from forming and expressing strong opinions clearly based on nothing but his prejudices against small town mayors, Republicans, and women who don't know their place as he sees it.  Furthermore, in claiming that "8 weeks from now" he will know nothing more about her, he asserts that his ignorance is willful, for given the opportunity to inform himself he chooses not to but prefers to retain his existing prejudice and ignorance.

And this is the opposite of bigotry.  You even recognize that your perceptions may be colored by pre-existing beliefs about the film, but determine to keep your mind open and to withhold judgment until you've investigated it for yourself.

Watching back-episodes of The Apprentice (UK). If I get beyond the entertainment factor it becomes depressing how often only the most cretinous people are ruthless enough to succeed in capitalistic society. The last episode I saw generated this pearl regarding anticipation of the group's visit to Rome:

"Yeah, you got the Colosseum. From the Gladiator film.

You got...

...

There's just shit there!"

I watched a rather unloved Hitchcock film, The Paradine Case. It's a court-room drama with Gregory Peck, rather bleak, a bit like The Wrong Man. Still, I found it interesting and entertaining.

Yes; we chanced on that late one night. Worth seeing once!

David - I saw this film recently and we enjoyed - fast paced and held our interest; now I'm not a member of Facebook (but Susan belongs & enjoys) - and I've not really followed the abrupt rise of this individual - but worth a watch, whether you want to pay more to see the film in a theater or wait until a 'cheaper' option - a recommendation from me - Dave
