A person can be ethnically Jewish but he would practice Buddhism.
Thats a possibility, don't you think?

Goldie Hawn's family practiced Judaism and Buddhism I think.

Hmmm...how interesting, the idea that a Jew would practice Roman Catholicism...

Even more interesting, that a Jew would have been baptised Roman Catholic, profess Roman Catholic faith, yet due to his or her mother's partial Jewishness, be considered essentially Jewish.

Baruch Goldstein, anyone?

I think this site here should cover this fascinating subject:

No other religious or ethnic group is obsessed with announcing the identity their famous members.  I have yet to see a list of famous Lutherans or famous Japanese.  Of course, now that I've said that, some smart-a$$ will probably find one and post it, but so be it.  :P

And no other religious or ethnic group is stereotyped as much  :-\ It was not the Anti Defamation League but a single person who opened this topic.

This might be due to the fact that the Jewish people are a minority population in the world, yet their achievements as a population are quite often outstanding. Paucis verbis, they have good  reason to boast, in my humble opinion.

Hey, Saul, let me make your day: Ron Jeremy is Jew too.  ;D

I don't know Andy. A person does not choose which race he was born into, and that makes it rather pointless in my view to boast of "his/her people"'s achievements. I think I am rather individualistic in this regard. Why should I be proud of Ms Streisand's voice, or Mahler's compositions or Stallone's punches  ;D
It may just be that because of their minority status, they might have had to work a bit more to stand out. Perhaps that's why we do not have any prominent artists/writers/philosophers hailing from Israel these days  >:D

Excellent point, orbital. I personally am amazed and admiring of the high incidence of philanthropy among the Jewish people, but then again I'm a big fan of philanthropy in general.

I disagree.  Mormons, Catholics, Muslims, blacks, Hispanics and Arabs (just to name a few) are stereotyped quite a lot, and arguably more than Jews.

It's precisely this boastfulness that I disagree with.  Highlighting one group's achievements is no better than highlighting another group's shortcomings.  And doing so invites stereotyping.  I could use the same reasoning to make a list of famous criminals of a particular religion or ethnicity, but I doubt my list would be praised.  Membership in a religion or ethnicity does not make one person better than another.  We're all God's children, IMHO.

I don't recall writing anyone was better than anyone else. Actually I don't recall even intimating that.

Not when the terms of being "ethnically" Jewish are being forced upon him by a culture he doesn't belong to.

No, you didn't, but the attitude does exist and I was merely stating my opinion of it.
