Martinu and Bax neck and neck. Martinu is no surprise, but the popularity of the Bax cycle took me a bit off guard, despite the preponderance of musical Anglophiles on the board :)

Why isn't Schubert on the list, are his symphonies "obvious?"  I don't think so, two good ones, one not finished, the rest utterly forgettable.  I wouldn't even consider voting for him if here were on the list.   ???

I don't think 5 is "utterly forgettable".

The poll leaves out too many of my favorites like Guarnieri and Saygun.

My top 5 from this list: Ives, Miaskovsky, Milhaud, Prokofiev, and Rubbra. Easy pick for me.

Rubbra
Simpson
Martinu
Bax
Langgaard

OK, Langgaard is a stretch, but I refuse to vote for a "cycle" that contain less than 6 symphonies.

Just what I was thinking. One of Schubert's finest pieces, the 5th is.

Oh, I did not see Pettersson's name there. I'd replace Langgaard with Pettersson!!!

The Fifth is my favorite Schubert symphony. Carlos Kleiber and I love the Third too  8)  And the Second is great. In fact, I like them all.

he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Oh, come on. Tell the truth: You love the 3rd and the 5th. Mrs. Rock loves the others. Between the two of you, you love them all!

Something like that  ;)

Actually, she loves the Unfinished and Winterreise. I'm not sure she's aware of much else.

Vanessa loves many of the songs and the piano sonatas if played by Richter. But she does not like the symphonies. Regarding the 8th, Vanessa's comment is "Thank God he didn't finish it."

Archaic Torso of Apollo

Am surprised to see 3 votes for Glazunov, 5 for Langgaard, and 4 for Magnard. Didn't realize they were that popular.
