I really want to eat some Jalepeno Poppers after watching this -- I've never even heard of them before, they sound amazing -- I don't think you can get them in Europe


Please hit me with your favourite American USA recipes which I can make at home with ingredients I can buy in London.

Do they still have "Hard Rock Cafes" in big tourist cities? If there's one in London that'd be a suspect for Jalapeno poppers or similar.

I've only had them once, but boy were they ever tasty!  Certainly not "health food", but a fun treat.  I'll post a link to a basic recipe in the food thread.   :)

Your comment (and T.D.'s) brought to mind an old Billy Joel song which includes the line about "working too hard can give you a heart attack (ack, ack, ack, ack ack)" [from Movin' Out].

And it's all about moderation and keeping generally healthy and fit--from what I understand anyway.

I often ate them, as well as crayfish etouffee and turtle soup, when I lived in New Orleans. They don't eat eels however, I was surprised.

Not as popular as crayfish or catfish, but they eat alligators.

Ah -- Cafe Pacifico in Covent Garden is a favourite -- they do amazing, dangerous, cocktails. Will go there soon and try the poppers -- maybe this weekend.  Thanks.

Their description sounds more like what I had--mind you, this was probably about 20 years ago!  One of the husbands of the friends that I was with had ordered them and let me try one.  I doubt that (unlike the recipe that I had linked to) that they had bacon "bits" in them and I suspect probably one or two cheeses in them.  Can't honestly remember whether or not there was any cream cheese in them or not.  Recipes do evolve over the years too.  :)  In any event, I hope that you enjoy your meal!

Places like the Maple Leaf and The Cheese Bar seem to offer it, but quality and authenticity might be questionable.

I've never had it before now...nor cheese curds (apparently white cheddar is better/more authentic?).  From what I've seen (briefly googling) about 2/3 beef broth/stock and a 1/3 chicken stock for the gravy?  What have you eaten before T.D.?

I've been posting tongue-in-cheek about poutine.
I had it once in Tadoussac, Quebec (well Northeast of Quebec City). Looked like the first entry at

It was really heavy and I struggled to finish the portion despite being fairly well lubricated with potent Trappist beer (at that time I still drank alcohol and ate meat, etc). I had a simple poutine with just frites, gravy and cheese curds. I added some mayo to get more flavor.

In hindsight I'd have preferred poutine with extra ingredients and frills.
