My favorite Supraphon CDs are:

Beethoven Symphonies 1-9 with Paul Kletzki,

Hindemith Ludus tonalis with Hans Petermandl and

Bartok Piano Concerto no. 3 with Eva Bernathova / Karel Ancerl (Ancerl gold edition)

I have never systematically explored the Supraphon catalog, but inspired by Dry Brett's post and the current offer on Supraphon recordings at Presto, I have reviewed their catalog and made several purchases as downloads. Particularly in the area of Renaissance and Baroque music, but also several piano sonatas by Beethoven, an area of particular interest to me at the moment, as I am in the process of listening through as many of my CDs and downloads with LvB piano sonatas as possible.

The Hans Petermandl looks interesting. I will check it out!

It is worth noting that some years later, Petermandl made a new recording of Ludus Tonalis for Naxos. Both recordings are worth knowing.

For general information - all of these Supraphon albums can be ordered as download - nearly all at least FLAC, some higher-res too from

https://www.supraphonline.cz/

for example the Angelica May/Dvorak disc pictured above is a FLAC for 129 CZK = £4.32 - a lot of the older recordings are quite a bit cheaper so the Chalabala/Dvorak Tone Poems are 86 CZK = £2.88 for the FLAC version

I've read complaints about it before, but I can't think of a single example from personal experience of the Gold Edition.

Petrushka and the New World. I made a comparison with the original recordings.
Although I didn't check the original recordings, other Gold Editions also sound like artificial stereo a little to me, ie. Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto, Mussorgsky Pictures, etc..

Interesting.  I don't believe that I have any of the original recordings to compare them too.  Wonder if perhaps @Irons has any of the Gold Editions (I expect that he has a bunch of the LPs) to make a comparison?

Thanks for doing the comparisons.  I do remember some of the Gold Edition transfers sounded a bit too bright and "scrubbed up", but didn't trust my memory.  I'm glad many of the old editions can still be streamed.

There is a good number of Supraphon discs I may add here: they are possibly my favourite label. But this one, I am certain, will always be my no. 1:

This runs it a very close second, though...

I do not have any Gold Edition CDs K.

Some of the best artwork for covers during the LP era. A sample (there are many more) -

For me Supraphon come into their own with chamber music which are uniformly superb. Orchestral (sound) can be variable. One orchestral recording I value greatly being the finest performance I have ever heard of Beethoven's "Pastoral" Symphony with Karel Sejna conducting Czech Philharmonic. Once heard never forgotten in fabulous (mono) sound.

You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Supraphon will soon be releasing a 6 CD box set of their Lovro von Matacic recordings.

...I wonder if Chalabala and Sejna boxes may be in the works?

The only Sejna that I have is a two-CD set which is part of the "Great Czech Conductors" series.  Have heard of Chalabala but don't know his recordings.

I love this recording of "Rosamunde Quartet" so much I self-ration playing's. Little chance of the magic fading but not taking any chances.

Was that Janacek Schubert D 804 ever on CD?
