Interested in recommendations of DVDs, not CDs, of Tchaikovsky's 3 ballets. (I already have the 7 CD box set, Andre Previn and the LSO).
Would like to get DVDs of these ballets. Thank you for any recommendations.

If you can find it, I recommend the Nureyev/Fonteyn/Lanchberry Swan Lake from 1966. Perhaps a little dated, however, I love it because of the "not so happy ending", which I feel fits so well with the dramatic ending of the score of Swan Lake.

It is also available on YouTube.

This one for The Sleeping Beauty I can recommend as well! Gaël Lambiotte used to be a dancer for our city's Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

Two in a row. Thanks. Just saw the first one on Amazon.
Another 5 minutes and I'll have all 3.

Nice! I don't have a recommendation for a Nutcracker DVD. I've only attended live performances of it but I'm sure there are numerous fabulous productions of it on DVD Blu-ray.

Thank you. The two you recommended are on Amazon. Much appreciated.

(poco) Sforzando

#7
For Nutcracker, the New York City Ballet choreography by Balanchine is excellent and I've seen it numerous times live. I believe the production was filmed twice and the most recent version is apparently the more readily available. I think it's the same as on this YouTube (though the YT video is poor):

However if you can find the earlier one (with a very young Macaulay Culkin as the Nutcracker Prince), it is also worth having. Here's a bit of it:

Roasted Swan

There is an Australian Ballet Company version of Nutcracker that I adore;

It is subtitled The Story of Clara and is a reworking.  But I love what they do and I love the choroegraphy - the YouTube link is the complete ballet - jump to the big Act I "Pineforest" section (no pine forest here!) or the Act II Pas de Deux for some great dancing.......

On August 18, 1991, the main state TV channel in Moscow endlessly looped Swan Lake instead of the usual programming. This happened after the President of the USSR was removed from power and packed off during the August Coup.

I'm eagerly awaiting the triumphant return of Swan Lake on every Russian channel — TV, radio, the internet, any other modern marvels. Preferably as soon as possible. Any performance will do, even on a balalaikas, as long as it fits the occasion.

@Dave B

Do chime back and report your thoughts, once you've had a good chance to listen to the Previn recordings and your DVDs!  :)  Enjoy. 8)
