The music, Greg! What did you think of the music!?

8)
not my thing, but when they start doing the solos, one playing some chromatic stuff, the other playing blues stuff, it sounded pretty sweet  8)

i remembered the Scorpions song i was talking about- Coast to Coast.

I must confess -- those clips just didn't do it for me.  :(

I guess I'm just long over the whole shred-for-the-sake-of-shred thing; I much prefer well-rounded bands that happen to include some "balls" in the guitar department, so to speak. And I find that, like dtwilbanks, I generally now prefer rock music with vocals.

Greg, you should check out Umphrey's Mcgee -- they are a great, diverse band with two excellent guitarists, one of whom shreds like it's nobody's business. Check out their album "Anchor Drops" (though avoid the lame 4th track, "Bullhead City"). I imagine you'd really dig the tracks "Plunger" and "Wife Soup"; and probably most of their stuff, to be honest. And they're one of the best current bands I've seen live (like 10 times).

For the record, I still play guitar and currently work at a guitar shop... and I have a solid shred background, having seen G3 twice (once with Yngwie -- yuck -- and once with Petrucci), met Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani (both of whom I still greatly admire), and seen Dream Theater like 3 times (including the now famous show in Chicago in which they played Metallica's entire "Master of Puppets" album for the second set). So check out Umphrey's!
that's cool, i wish i could've gone to a G3 concert. I've tried twice, i think, with Yngwie in G3 but it was too expensive, my dad wanted to go, too. At least I've got one thing of Yngwie's- a pick my dad caught at a concert once. But he won't let me play with his pick, i might end up doing too many string scrapes and ruin it, after all. I have played with it before, though- feels good knowing in a way, you're connected to one of the guys who has inspired you so much  :)

can you post a clip or two of Umphrey's?

greg

look at this guy's speed picking technique:

now if i can figure out how to do that, but with scales, i can rule the world  >:D

Look harder.  ;D

The Emperor

Well King Crimson is indeed something unique heheh
I love Genesis as well, but it's more song oriented maybe, but you cant go wrong with the stuff with Peter Gabriel, but you want instrumentals right?
Yes or ELP would be other suggestions that i like, the 20 min songs, The Gates of Delerium by Yes or Supper's Ready By Genesis at least you should try, big epic progressive songs, but again, not instrumentals per se, although those songs have big instrumental parts obviously.

longears

Instrumental rock me like The Pretenders Space Invaders

Plenty. For my money, though, the one band that is pushing the envelope as much as Crimson did in the 70s is a band called Canvas Solaris; you can hear their work right here:

And here you can read my somewhat surrealistic review of their latest disc, Cortical Tectonics:

buckethead.
first time i saw him during the 2000 vmas, I thought somebody was making fun of slash.

he gives me a headache. I dont care how fast he shreds.  his sound is whiny, like a 1980's nintendo.  Lots of effects.

I actually used to love that 1980s, almost synthesized guitar sound.  Now I love the raw, the gritty stuff.

I use the cheapest distortion (the orange stompbox by boss), and in my opinion it sounds great.  My guitar even sounds overdriven if I turn down the volume knob on my guitar.  I hate that "metal" sound.  It sounds good but doesn't fill up the space.  Anybody knows what I mean?  When I play one chord, there're so many overtones and things that it sounds nice, rich and full.  But with that metal sound, sure it's heavy, but kind-of empty...
