that can be dangerous, though.
there's not much that's more frightening to mindlessly turn on your amp, without looking at the settings, and seeing that it's turned up all the way when you play a chord. Not very fun....

I use the cheapest distortion (the orange stompbox by boss), and in my opinion it sounds great.  My guitar even sounds overdriven if I turn down the volume knob on my guitar.  I hate that "metal" sound.  It sounds good but doesn't fill up the space.  Anybody knows what I mean?  When I play one chord, there're so many overtones and things that it sounds nice, rich and full.  But with that metal sound, sure it's heavy, but kind-of empty...

D

I think the "empty sound" you are describing involves turning down the mids all the way and turning up the highs all the way. I agree with you -- I quite enjoy crunchy tones with enough mids to "fill up the space," although not too much mids such that I can't control the feedback. If you don't like the mids, a compressor + wah setup with a tube amp will do the trick.

Unfortunately I dont have much "live" stuff with good sound.  But you can see here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wYuhd2Hq68

the two last sound clips are with me.

Also you can go to www.myspace.com/lokithegrump and listen to the 3rd and 4th songs that we recorded.  Unfortunately that was recorded directly into the computer, but I was using "my sound" so I was happy with the sound, even though we all know playing with a real amp sounds and feels better.

Satriani- Memories (live)

ok, just ignore the gay outfit he's wearing. If you can listen to this an say ALL instrumental shred stuff is souless, then you need a few cutips. It's the stuff that reminds me of over-the-top late Romantic, early modern classical that really has a punch and is all about dramatic expression, yet at the same time is complex... except this is in rock form, and the guitar part is the main complex thing.
Just amazing, the solo he does in the Dreaming #11 can't be matched by any other solo, ever. This is a video that's similar to that version, but not 100%

i was thinking about doing a recording of Not of this Earth by Joe Satriani, with me on guitar, maybe putting it on youtube or something.... then my dad finds this guy who plays that and a bunch of other stuff- the Malmsteen is especially impressive  :o

hey greg, I liked the self-titled one Satriani put out years back...thought it was a good album that hung together - a guitar album - i.e. the whole thing is based on and comes out of a guitar ...

there's a lot to recommend on it...great sound, great band, great taste in the idiom, the feel and sound of the record, and it was well put together, nicely arranged, very nicely recorded & produced. ... never overstays it's welcome ... well hardly anyhow. The opening track is a weaker one but.... and overall the guitar solos are usually pretty good, but his solos and the way they sound and the notes he plays aren't of that much interest to me, that wasn't what I particularly liked, but the record doesn't depend on them (his solos) cause there's so much more there! Lots of good honest rock'n'roll bloodline - no bullshit ... no hype. But adding to the tradition with a lot of fun and imagination. It's not all my cup of tea ... but it impressed me nonetheless and it proves that he has much more to him than others, for me he seemed that he was always tainted with an association of guitar tricks/extravaganza type music, gimmicky stuff.... but on that one the music comes first - not jerking off....
i also like that album, James. I'm surprised you don't care for the opening track since that's one of his most-performed songs live, at least (so it's a favorite), but yeah, it definetely has a more hushed sound to it, more layed back.  It's like the exact opposite of the Engines of Creation album with loud techno beats throughout, and ultra-distorted guitar sounds, a very very wild album.
The last two albums he's put out seem to be watered down, mainly pretty disappointing... the music is way too simple and sounds like he's trying to appeal to a wider audience, maybe so more people will understand his music? I hope he doesn't keep on doing this, what made his music stand out and seem odd compared to other "rock" music is exactly what got me interested in music, period, i'd hate to see that go away  :P

here is neat little instrumental ditty (with jazz elements etc.) from 1981,
that was performed live on MTV of all places, boy have things changed since then...hehe

yeah, very hard to imagine that MTV would've ever had that on!

I saw the Mothers of Invention open for the Mahavishnu Orchestra at Nassau Coliseum in 1973, I think Zappa was perhaps not entirely thrilled with that arrangement and did a fusion parody (Ponty was playing violin, so there was no doubt who they were spoofing >:D) The Mothers were terrific as usual, so like many in the audience I was wondering how the M.O. would do. They came out, the gong sounded against a background of amplifier hum, everyone was leaning forward in anticipation it seemed, and then WWIII broke out....just a torrent of sound. It actually took me some time to process what I was hearing, but in the end it was one of my favorite mostly-all-instrumental rock concerts (there was some Zappa-oid doo wop in there somewhere).

Sounds memorable, indeed, Ernie!  I feel sorry for the poor kids today who get only slickly marketed pre-digested pablum.

Vai is just a member of the ZpZ touring band there...but the leader of the whole thing is Frank's son Dweezil (hence, Zappa plays Zappa)...in that video Dweezil is the other guitarist using FZ's old Gibson SG playing the melody of the tune in unison with Vai. Frank's old drummer Terry Bozzio, is also in the video playing the melody, he's the original drummer that the piece was specifically written for...(see album Zappa in New York for details)
