If GMG has a fault, it is that many of its contributors like to avoid the obvious, and instead lean towards the esoteric.  This thread so far is a prime example. 
It is hard to believe it has got this far without mention of Dmitri Shostakovich, or Charles Ives.

Of course in stylistic terms both those are firmly rooted in 19thC tradition - and so too was Mahler, although most of his output - his 4th Symphony and everything after that - was completed in the 20thC.  Other date 'edge cases' such as Sibelius and Debussy have already been cited, perhaps because stylistically they are decidedly more 'modern'.
