I thought it might be an idea to have a thread where we can discuss conductors who've become closely associated with the repertoire of certain composers. It could come in useful for those who, when faced with countless recordings of any given work by any given composer, are wondering which conductor to choose as a potential 'safe bet'.
Off the top of my head, I associate the following:
1) Mackerras - Mozart, Janacek
2) Boult / Davis (A) - Elgar
3) Berstein / Haitink - Mahler
4) Davis (C) - Berlioz
5) Handley - Vaughan Williams, Bantock

... and here, I fall down. ;D
Apologies for the British bias, but conductors and their repertoire are not my strong suit ... hence this thread. ;)

Mackerras is also closely associated with the work of Handel, Boult with Vaughan Williams, Bernstein with Schumann (he was the first to record Schumann's symphonies unedited in Schumann's own orchestrations), Sibelius, and, of course, his own music.

Previn with Vaughan Williams, and the Russians.  He is especially adept at working with instrumental soloists in concerted works.

Szell with Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert Syms 8 & 9, Mendelssohn Sym 4, Schumann, Brahms, Dvorak, Wagner, Sibelius, Strauss, and Dutilleux.

Reiner with Bartok and Strauss.

William Christie with Marc Antoine Charpentier.

Really? I don't know why, but that surprises me.

Yes, I can confirm that.  Bernstein did excellent recordings of the Paris Symphonies, the Creation, and the Mass in time of war (aka Paukenmesse).
