We all have composers, most of whose output we love, who occasionally turn us off with works we simply don't enjoy. For me (and sacrilege though this will be for some), I adore Beethoven, but really don't care much for some of his Piano Sonatas or Bagatelles.

Any pieces by masters you otherwise revere which just don't make the grade for you?

Hate is a strong word, but I never cared much for the vocal parts of Wagner's operas.  ;D

May I step in Andrei, and agree with you most heartily? ;D

Be my guest, Harry, stay by my side, blindfold your eyes and let's wait together for the firing squad!  :D

Brahms, Academic Festival OVerture

I don't particularly care for this one although it's not as strong as 'hate.' It just annoys me a little :-\ ;).

Love Dvorak, but not a huge fan of his first two symphonies.  They're not bad, but I can take or leave them.  To be fair, he was still trying to work out how to write well at that time.

It is not a matter of hate, but I simply don't like some works even from my favorite composers.

Examples:

BEETHOVEN: 5th piano Concerto

DEBUSSY: Images (orchestra)

SCHÖNBERG: Pélleas et Melisande

WEBERN: Lieder on poems of Trakl

Well you invited it man with the thread. ;D  Eventually someone was going to post work that you happen to love.

Florestan

How about this, Mark: I've always felt that Eroica's last movement is the weakest finale Beethoven wrote, apart from the 9th.  ;D

O, but the finale of the 9th is far worse I think, I admit never playing that without a equilizer to filter all the voices out. ;D

Much as I love Schubert, I find his symphonies rather weak, save 4th, 8th and 9th (this last is a masterpiece, OTOH).

Rather weak?
Methinks not! :)
Rather strong I would say, just listen to the marvelous Marriner performances, amongst others.
