So female beauty depends on the entire body.

Or, dare I say it, her personality? ::)

The Emperor

I wish the girls next to my door were like Scarlett or Monica.... ;D

I think Premont was only supplying that condition as necessary,  not meant to be considered as sufficient. ;D

True: when a sparkling spirit shines through, the woman who seemed rather plain reveals astonishing beauty; while some who take one's breath away at first sight look coarser and less fair with every word they speak.

What is beauty?

Bernarda and Marcos Fink singing Canciones Argentinas. :)

You are right.
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

Beauty is anything that creates a feeling of spiritual joy in the human soul.
The human being has certain  "spiritual buttons" in him, that respond to what the eye or ear experiences. When someone sees something and that something causes those  spiritual buttons to respond, the person will say " that is beautiful".
That's why beauty is so subjective because different personalities posses different spiritual buttons , and since these spiritual buttons varies from one person to the next, then its entirely possible that what one person considers as beautiful the other might not agree.

But some things in the world are beautiful for everyone, and these "spiritual buttons" respond to them almost the same way .

Everyone agrees that a sunset is beautiful.
Everyone agrees that nature is beautiful.
Everyone agrees that music is a beautiful thing. They might disagree on what type of music is "Beautiful" but they agree that Music as of itself is a beautiful thing.

And there are other examples where the concept of "Beautiful" holds a universal acceptance.

Anyways, that 's my theory, I could be right or wrong, but nevertheless, it's an opinion.

Maybe the point is, that you are induced to believe, that she is within your reach, even if she isn´t (in the real world).

but the funny thing about this is that another one, who looks just like her, is easily within your reach and you could get her over fish and chips (or a burger and fries for the yanks). like i said, girl next door, when they all look alike, doesn't make any sense to me.

Oh no, they don´t look alike at all, neither on "girl next door pages" nor in the real life, on the contrary the opulent diversity is one of mother Natures great gifts. So I don´t understand your objection.

On the other hand - if they all looked alike, the attraction caused by their look would detoriate very fast, and we would have to tell them from each other in other ways, a.g. by means of their character, and this would perhaps not be that bad.

On the buttons, Saul, but you can certainly be so "unctuous".

Let's forget about beauty in women/men for now because it coordinates with sexuality. How about beauty in art? What drives the creator in his attempt to embrace ideal beauty in his art? Or even as an observer, what drove Aschenbach to Tadzio?
Let me study Plato's Phaedrus and I'll be back to continue...

This would include everyone who was blind?

I am not just nit-picking here. People who are not able to evaluate the world as most might, nevertheless have the concepts of beauty, but they are a different evaluation from the norm, nevertheless valid.

Taking it a stage further, I have met a number of people who are indifferent to music, even though they are not deaf. Ditto, some people have no response to nature. So the universal concepts do not hold water. A majority might suggest consensus over some things, but taste can change; at random...in art, in gardening, in interior design. There are lots of things once thought the height of beauty over which we would now raise a quizzical eyebrow.

Papageno posed the question.........what drove Aschenbach to Tadzio? If you are suggesting it was not male beauty, or at least sensuality if not outright sexuality, then I disagree. Here was a character who felt the senses were not connected to the soul, but who was swept away by the beauty of a specific youth, he discovered love through the senses, its power brought about his acquiescence to death. The old sex'n death partnership.

If someone doesnt think that a sunset is beautiful, there is something wrong with him.

I can´t see for which reason I should wear glasses!
Well, joke aside, I can´t see how a blind could find a sunset beautiful.

So true.  I knew a guy who would go out of his way not to listen to music.  To him, ALL music was an annoyance.

Do I mention your religion when you post things?
