I'm eagerly waiting for your reviews of KV 1 up to KV 626. :)

170 cd's, well, that will take me a while.
Have all the operas from a friend on loan next to me, plus the Oratorios, and other vocal works.

BTW, how about Kuijken's Cosi? Heard it by now?

Bits and pieces yes, had a rather hectic weekend as you know, birthday and all.
When my friend came on my party he took a big box from this edition with him, and curious as I was sampled a bit. I think I am going to like it....................

Of particular interest to me, Harry, would be your opinion of the Violin Concerti CDs. If these are the same recordings as included in Brilliant's smaller, 'Mozart Masterworks' 40-CD box, then I'd advise caution: the discs might possibily be faulty, with skipping and jumping taking place. To be truthful, I don't know if that was as a result of a damaged CD (I used to own the smaller set), poor transfer to disc or just poor recording.

As I said earlier, I have a direct line to Joan Records, so if anything is wrong with the discs, I can change them.
Since you told me before of this problem with the violin concerti, I asked them, and they said it was indeed bad printing problems. But we will see.

Well that's reassuring. And impressive that you managed to find out how to contact them directly ... their website is disconcertingly vague unless you're a wholesale customer.

Comes with the old contacts in the recording business, just know a few people, in this respect Holland is a small village.

Hello Harry and Congratulations on ordering this set.  I hope you enjoy it and I am so glad to hear that you are slowly getting into opera.  Which brings me to my question:  Can you please confirm if the librettos for the operas that come with this box set have either English or French translations?

If you recall You, Mark, some other members of  GMG and I had a breif discussion on this matter a while back ago and it was decided that the librettos are not translated. I  just wanted to further verify this point.

Thank You and please post your reviews of this set.

I am sorry Marvin, but so far as I can see, its either in Italian or German, but no other translations.
For me that is not a problem, but others may want to download a translation of the libretti.
The extreme low price of 60 euro's, (original price 112,-) may be the reason of this, but it is quite simple to download them. I am willing to do that having to pay only 60 euro's.
And than the question of liking opera, I always loved baroque opera, and authentic performances of Handel/Mozart operas. So long as the sopranos have mercy on me, all will be well.

Harry

Well to my big surprise with the post came this complete box a few minutes ago, from a woman friend from Germany. She send me all minus the operas, so all instrumental works, 12 boxes in toto.
Isn't that grand, a belated birthday present.  :)

Piano sonatas.
Serenades and divertimenti for Winds.
Complete symphonies.
Complete SQ.
Wind Concertos.
Serenades for Orchestra.
Piano concertos.
Solo Piano works.
Violin sonates.
Chambermusic complete.

Thank you Harry  :).  By the way, and not to give anyhthing away here, but look out for the "Queen of the Night" aria in Mozart's the Magic Flute (Die Zauberflote), I would be interested in hearing your reaction to what is considered one of the greatest arias Mozart wrote for Soprano.

This set will probably be my next big purchase as well Harry.  Let me know what you think.

Which one Bill, the Brilliant or the Mozart? :)

The Brilliant.  I posted my reasoning for this back on the 9th.  Here is what I wrote:

You know, the complete Bach by Brilliant just does not interest me as I am still getting to know his music and feel that most would sit on the shelf for years and years.  However, for me personally, I have found that with Haydn, Beethoven, and Mozart that I do not necessarily need the best performances to actually enjoy the recording.  For example, I enjoy my Mozart Tate symphony set though I still have other recordings I enjoy more of particular symphonies.  Another example would be my disc of early string quartets by Sequoia SQ.  It is not a standard by any means when it comes to a "must have" on the shelf, but I still enjoy the recording....etc. etc.  And right now Amazon has this for $103 and I would also like to have "copies" of the Mozart operas, but do not want to pay 20+ for each.  So for me, the above set works.  Will there be performances that may make me cringe a bit?  Maybe.  But for me I am guessing this occurrence will be the rare exception.

Thank you, will give my impressions as soon as one of them hits my player.

I have the Complete Brilliant Mozart (and recommend it heartily to one and all). The violin concerti are by Verhey and the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, and the discs play fine. I've encountered no technical problems with the discs in this set, though I did on one of the discs in Brilliant's Fischer Bartok set.

Wow. That's a VERY nice present, indeed. I do not have all these boxes myself, but I do own the violin sonata set and can attest that it's utterly wonderful--Grumiaux and Klien doing the late ones are especially fine, but all the performances are first rate.

Enjoy your treasures!
