John Charles Thomas?

Who he?

Allan Jones, he was good in a Marx Bros. movie.

Even Carreras, not great to my ears.

DavidW: Yeah Mike doesn't get angry, he gets even.
I wasted time: and time wasted me.

I am going to be completely honest with you, I thought about it and decided I could not be bothered. It was really more of a comment than a genuine question.

I did google Dawson, as I was not sure whether he was from the UK, he was Australian. The item I found praised his voice extravagantly, but my own recollection was of dull woolly Handel singing. Another who would not be appearing on my top 100 list.

Humph! And you refuse to choose a singer for your desert isle?  :P

Just one is tough. Janet Baker.....but I have to have everything she recorded, complete. I also want all the words and translations.

As it seems the BBC is about to issue a live performance of her in the Faure Requiem, I even get that as an unexpected bonus.

Thanks, Mike!

By the way, I'm finally listening to the Aida (while I work) you recommended a ways back. Smashing!

Great, do give us your thoughts once you get a chance.

You remind me, I NEED on the island all of Leontyne Price's discs, ditto Vickers! This will quickly get out of hand because I need frequent fixes of Janowitz and Auger, Christoff and Terfel. and....and....

It'll be quite a surprise when you unwrap the parcel with hands shaking a bit of anticipation and what you get is the collected croonings of Perry Como.  ;D

I would find more use for his wig.

I'm an opera rookie. "Smashing!" was my thought.  ;D

But, oh what a glorious voice it was in his early years. I'm thinking his Gabriele Adorno on the Abbado Simon Boccangera, his Cavaradossi on the Davis Tosca, and his Edgardo on Caballe's Lucia di Lammermoor. His Don Carlo in Karajan's recording is pretty impressive too, as is his Radames, even if it is a notch or two too big for him; his lyrical singing is quite beautiful.

\"A beautiful voice is not enough.\" Maria Callas

for me, Tebaldi and Monaco,Nilsson and Corelli,Sutherland and ...someone (it's quite difficult to choose a tenor with Sutherland ,even Pavarotti),Schwarzkopf,Stader,Bergonzi,...
