He shouldn't have to move at all, since Titurel's supposed to be older than dirt and barely hanging on to life by a thread in act I, and, if Wagner's stage directions are followed (a big "if", I know), we don't actually see him, just hear his voice, "as if coming from a grave".  And in act III he's a corpse.  Sounds like the role was written for Howell.   ;D

Yes, he found his niche at last. I was in choir for at least a dozen of his performances, Mr Reliable. But the tingle factor was reserved for his electric razor. I always felt he had to have a very good agent. No one but family would have gone to a concert because he was in it, but he managed a lot of otherwise stellar lineups. One in particular, Bach St Matthew Passion, Abbado, Margaret Price, Jessye Norman, Peter Schreirer, Philip Langridge and good old Howell. Mahler 8.....same story.

I should not complain, he hit his notes, never let the side down and wandered quietly off at the end.

But Goebbels also accomplished those things.

Are you talking about Heiner or Joseph?

The one who killed his kids.

The one who killed his kids.

Does that count as wandering off quietly? He even killed himself, too.

How did we end up here? It is not impossible that Gwynie bored kids to death, but it would have been purely accidental.

Back on topic. I now have the Knappersbush 1964 performance. I have listened to the first disc. I will write summat once I get to hear more. I think Vickers has been vouchsafed one phrase so far.

Mike,

I was just going to tell you that my copy arrived today too.  I have not had a chance to listen yet.

Hotter is a bit wobbly, but we expected that did we not? His clarity with the words though is an object lesson. How about the verbiage of written notes about the producer, the production, the Wagner legacy? Deathless prose, I will try to give folk a couple of quotes.
