how do you save your place in an html or pdf file?

i've never figured out how to do this, but i really need to know how!

i want it to where every time i open the document, it goes back to the position where i closed it. (i use Firefox for both html and pdf files)

it does that automatically, most of the time, if it's not shut down right, but how do you get it to do it automatically whenever you want?
