Es gibt ein Reich from Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos. I like the way the voice is made to fly, with power.

Jessye Norman,

Enjoy

DavidW: Yeah Mike doesn't get angry, he gets even.

my 1 favorite aria? goshh probably voi che sapete from figaro.

Tsaraslondon

Probably a toss up between Ah non credea from La Sonnambula and Qui la voice from I Puritani (both as sung by Callas).

Then again, there's Adieu, fiere cite, or the haunting Vallon sonore, both from Les Troyens

And that, of course, makes me think of Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas.

Then, of course, I think of Verdi and a whole host of possibilities present themselves. No, it's far too difficult.

Lilas Pastia

Je crois entendre encore from Bizet's Pearlfishers
E la solita storia from Cilea's L'Arlesiana
D'Amor sull'alli rosee, Verdi's Il Trovatore
D'Amour, l'ardente flamme, Berlioz' La Damnation de Faust
J'ai perdu mon Eurydice from Gluck's Orphée et Eurydice (the French version, not the Italian one)
O Malheureuse Iphigénie, Iphigénie en Tauride by Gluck

Mine is almost certainly:

E lucevan le stelle.

...that's like asking, what's your favorite Black Hole in the known universe...which suck in all your emotions. Impossible to answer but E lucevan le stelle is definitly a top contender in my book.  ::).

But if operetta qualifies it would be the Wolgalied from Der Zarewitsch by Lehár...Es steht ein soldat am Wolgastrand. But I'm lying it's merely one of the top 50 or is it one of the top 20. It depends on the mood! Another also by Lehár is 'Freunde Das Leben ist Lebenswert from Giuditta und Mädchen, mein Mädchen, from Friederike.

Last, not least, and very likely FIRST Das Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde and then there's Mozart. What can one say, SUPERMAN is the only word that comes to mind. Nothing seemed to be beyond him! >:D

Gluck is also truly sublime. The recording by Janet Baker of Gluck arias was a revelation which happened years ago. It still is every time I listen to it!

Lady Chatterley

Really? That aria has always eluded me, it even bores me. Maybe I need to know the words to enjoy it. Or maybe I just like Vivaldi's rage arias. Someone should put out a cd called rage arias. It would be great driving music.

Though often sung as a solo piece, the Korngold is, strictly speaking, a duet. I also love it, especially as sung by Schwarzkopf in a radio broadcast from the 1950s
