Hello everyone,

I would like to start a post about music books. This way, we can share our favourites, allow others to learn more about music, give beginner musicians a guideline of what to read, and we can inform people that music theory does not bite.

If at all possible, I would appreciate this thread being made permanent ("stickied" in forum lingo) so this can be a quick reference guide.

For starters, I will list off a few categories of music books. As time goes by, this list will be updated to reflect additional resources and categories.

Additionally, each category will be divided into three levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Thus, readers will be able to pick out what they'd like to read at the appriopriate level. As they move up the ladder, the categorisation will help them into deciding what to read next.

If anyone has any comments or suggestions, please let me know! I look forward to enjoying music with everyone!

That is a good thread, but I think that it would be more convenient and more advantageous if all the resources listed could be categorised into different musical subjects and levels of difficulty (i.e. Schenkerian Analysis probably isn't the best thing for a beginner).

Additionally, I could update the main thread so there is one reference list, instead of having 60 pages of resource materials.

The topic Books on classical music . . . has been quite successful for a long time, only needed retrieving from a few pages back in the history of GMG, and I am sure it will remain successful in it's present status.  8)

That thread certainly is successful.

My original idea for the new thread is so all the music books/references there could be classified. Instead of looking through the entire 3 pages of posts, one can refer to the Music Harmony column to see what forum members here recommend for that particular subject.

I do not mind at all if there will be 2 posts.
