I know it's not kosher or PC, but Karajan's Decca VPO recording of Rimsky Korsakov's version of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov is going cheap in the HMV sale and I've got a CD voucher burning a hole in my pocket. I've got Abbado's Sony BPO recording of Mussorgsky's original, and I'm happy with it, but I'm sort of curious to compare RK's version of this opera with the authentic article. Am I mad? Am I displaying a complete and utter lack of taste? Should I just get my coat and leave?

Here is a link with reviews of several recordings and various versions of the opera. The Rimsky is well worth hearing.

Hell, I'd pay regular price for Karajan's Decca Boris, so if it's dirt cheap I say just buy it.

Thanks - good to see your lengthy review of the recording in question. You've persuaded me.

As far as I know, Rimsky Korsakov-ised version is a custom one, and the original is less. Anyway, Gergiev and Kirov opera did a 5-CD's set with both editions.

As far as I know, the Rimsky Korsakov version of Boris Godunov is not performed anymore in the majority of the opera houses. Maybe, it is still preferred in Russia.

Gergiev and the Kirov 5-CD's set of the opera on the Philips label, does not have the Rimsky Korsakov version. It has the two original Moussorgsky's versions: the 1869 Version (no Polish act, no Kromy forest scene etc.) and the 1872 Version.

Oh, you are right, I am mistaken with it!
And as for Rimsky-Korsakov version...I know that theater in my city staged that version and was said it is the regular one.
Is it an authentism - staging only Mussorgsky versions?  ;D
