Didn't reduce your room at all, simply reminded you of the subject's title. I could have deleted the 'off topic' posts, see how nice I am?  0:)

Well I am glad you have a very good impression of yourself, forgive me, if I abstain from commenting on this.
You could have deleted? Are you threatening me?
Maybe you attach to much importance to your role as moderator.

The new Gergiev/Kirov/Mariinsky "Swan Lake" that I was referring to. This recording is in the 16:9 Widescreen aspect ratio which is IMO ESSENTIAL for proper appreciation of a ballet.
"Good", is NOT good enough, when "better" is expected

Hi 12tone, I happen to like that DVD recording of La Traviata with Gheorghiu.  Although we (the GMG members) did have some objections to Gheorghiu "running frantically around" before collapsing dead at the end of the opera  ::).  The stage sets are as we say in England "SMART" and Gheorghiu is stunning both vocally and visually (just what Verdi had in mind for Violetta).  The singing is, on the whole very good but somehow as I posted on other threads Frank Lopardo as Alfredo failed to make a strong impression on me.  I am not saying he is bad, quite the contrary he delivers a strong consistent performance but I just got so used to Pavarotti  (CD recording) in that role that I found Lopardo not as engaging as I would have liked.  But by all means this DVD is worth owning.

Marvin,

Thanks for that previous post.

About this dvd here.  Is it a 'live' performance or is it a 'studio' performance as it were.  The one from Gergiev, from what I saw on screen shots, is atrocious.  There was no set to see.  It was absolutely bare!  Which had me thinking that his production was staged in a studio rather than on a huge set-filled stage in front of a live audience.  Blah.  That would be horrible.

Live performances only!

So is this live or studio? :

12tone its not a live performance but, you will definitely see the whole stage, the background is always lavishly decorated either with a drawing or props such as swans that move in the background and so on.  I found it very visually appealing but then again I do not know what you are used to.  I just want to mention that I got this as a gift from my sister who used to dance ballet and according to her the Kirov Ballet is legendary.  I suggest you sample if possible (maybe utube it and see for yourself)- but as far as I am concerned I simply love it- the whole performance took my beath away.

C. Kleiber/COA- Beethoven Sym 4 and 7
Verdi Requiem - Karajan, Price, Cossotto, Pavarotti, Ghiuarov

I love watching Kleiber on the podium. You get such a sense of euphoria from the sheer joy on his face.

Karajan, I find, has very mesmerising gestures.
Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den der heimlich lauschet.
