I like this interpretation: A Dream realisation! Composing music to 'illustrate' a dream, the one dreamt by the composer and only he knows what it was all about. Listening to it, we can make up our own dream, or story. I remember playing the Quartet to a couple. She was dumbfounded, knew not what to make of it, but then her husband 'wrote' a story, told it to her while the music played, and yes, all of a sudden she could 'see' what it could be about.

A dream; a story; our own personal imagination. I like it!  :)

And, in the end, don't we all bring our dreams and imaginations to every musical piece we hear?  I've been playing William Hill's Funky Little Crustaceans today, and there's a piece that definitely brings visions and colours to the mind, as much or more than the Helicopter String Quartet.  (It's nowhere near as difficult to perform, at least!) To some listeners, it might be nothing but annoying noise (though it isn't particularly avant-garde); another group will analyze it in detail, engaging their musical knowledge; a third group may see choirs of shrimp, lobsters dancing foxtrots and blue crabs engaged in voodoo ceremonies. Such is the miracle of the strange art called music.

I've just created an abstract image representing the Helicopter String Quartet; anyone interested can see it and all the rest of my posted art at www.myspace.com/cementshooz

OK, now you've ticked me off ;D.
You've made such a great case for this dream thing...the first thing that popped was that recurring scene in Catch-22, Alan Arkin's death scene? in the warplane...the clautrophobia of vivid dreams...how Arkin keeps trying to be heard over the noise? (recollection a bit fuzzy right now)

and THAT's what I'm hearing in the SQ. I mean, get a copy of Interpretation of Dreams, but,... OF COURSE there were helikopters in your dream Karl, but...was it Arditti in your dream? (cue ominous music).

YOU ARE ASLEEP NOW

Am I part of the dream also? Can you see how this thread is like the movie "The Ring"? Once you read it, you will be sucked into another...brrr...it gives me chills just....WAIT?...what was that?...

Karl?
Is that y..(.)...
