Oh, and that's the same Szpilman who wrote those memoires (The Pianist) later filmed by Roman Polanski - if anyone was wondering. 8)

www.eclassical.com features daily free downloads! :o

Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor/3: Allegro con fuoco - Allegro moderato,Bartlomiej Niziol,6:12
Henryk Wieniawski

And today they're offering the second movement. Hopefully, the first will follow (at some point ::))...

Lilas Pastia

I hear Wieniawski had a younger brother named Jozef who was also a composer. His mammoth violin sonata has just been recorded on Dux.

re: Szpielman: he's also the pianist in the recording you put on your share list of the Szymanowski sonata.  :D

Something religious for Ash Wednesday (though not strictly Passion-related):

Henryk Mikołaj Górecki - Zdrowaś bądź Maryja (Hail Mary) op. 54 (1985) five songs for mixed choir a cappella

during the 16th Gaude Mater Festival in Cracow (January 14th 2007)

1. Matko Niebieskiego Pana
2. Matko Najświętsza
3. Zdrowaś bądź, Maryja
4. Ach, jak smutne jest rozstanie
5. Ciebie na wieki wychwalać będziemy

Here you may listen to the full CD with Ilya Kaler and the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra (primarily a studio band) under Dmitry Yablonsky:

Violin Concerto 1. movement

Violin Concerto 2. movement

Violin Concerto 3. movement

Serenade melancolique

Souvenir d'un lieu cher - Meditation
(arranged for violin and orchestra by Glazunov)

Souvenir d'un lieu cher - Scherzo

Souvenir d'un lieu cher - Melodie

Valse-Scherzo

I have just downloaded Kaler's video from the 1985 Sibelius Competition and guess what... he plays the Sibelius concerto. After winning the Paganini Competition, and just before getting the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition. WOW.

I may upload it soon.

I already own the CD, but I have to ask, what exactly in this thread are the links apropos to?  :)

You're right that Kaler is one of the most decorated violinists of all time. During that stretch when he won the Sibelius, Paganini and Tchaikovsky competitions, he must have been just incredible ... well that's like a Triple Crown or something. Ilya Kaler is the Ted Williams of the violin.  :D

I have that, and like the work but since I didn't participate in the quiz... ::). Mind you, I'm not sure I'd have recognized it anyway. How long were the clips?
