Kullervo

Thanks, Maciek. I'm new to Szymanowski but I recently heard his Mythes and the violin sonata. Now I'm in love. :D

Maciek

There is some Szymanowski above, so I'm not sure if you're making this mistake but just to be safe:

ATTENTION!
Pawel Szymanski Karol Szymanowski

Ohhh nooo! I guess my eyes just read what they wanted to read. :D

That's because the first and last letters are in order.

And Perkowski? Where is Perkowski? His Sinfonietta and Nocturne for orchestra are just fantastic. I'm still circling around the violin and the cello concertos (tougher nuts to crack), but they're imposing, substantial works.

Maciek

The Nocturne is brilliant, isn't it? I can upload a piece that's not available on CD: Towards Atma (1976) for string orchestra, piano, and percussion. Dedicated to the memory of Karol Szymanowski (Du cote de chez Szymanowski would be an alternative translation of the title ;D).

Lilas Pastia

Sure, I'd be delighted to download that!

BTW what/where/who is ATMA? There's a record label by that name and I didn't think it could have any meaning...

Maciek

Don't know about the record label but Szymanowski's Atma was the name of a house he had in Zakopane (in the Tatra mountains): "Willa Atma" ('The Atma Villa'). Today it houses the regional Karol Szymanowski museum (not much of a museum really but the building itself is nice).

And here's Perkowski's piece:

Thanks! I downloaded it as well as the Szymanski 'sinfonietta'.  ;)

Anyone know of somewhere online to hear/record the Baltic Sea Festival concerts?

I really want to hear the Gergiev M5 this Sunday. Also there is Bruckner 4 and Sibelius 5 among others during the 1 week festival.

Any help appreciated. ;)

Maciek

This thread could use a little reviving. It used to be my primary source of new recordings and look at the state it's in now! :'(

Here's something from me to encourage others (Manuel, why don't you steal a few links somewhere? please?).

A Double Bass Concerto from 1959 by Andrzej Cwojdziński. I have no idea who this guy is but as there aren't that many double bass concertos around and we have a few fans of the genre on this board, I thought I'd post it. The concerto itself is in a neo-classical idiom.

The soloist is Bogusław Furtok. The orchestra: the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra. The conductor: Tadeusz Wojciechowski.

Movements:
1. Allegro molto
2. Notturno: Largo
4. Finale: Allegro molto

Well, I'm sort of on a roll... :P

Here's one of this year's biggest discoveries (for me). The Concerto for Soprano and Orchestra by Tadeusz Zygfryd Kassern. The piece was written in 1928, and is visibly influenced by Szymanowski's style. Any fan of Szymanowski's vocal works should try this - it's a revelation!

Kassern was born in 1904 in Lwów (Lviv). Studied in Lwów and Poznań, then (after 1931) also in Paris with Nadia Boulanger ( ::)) or someone from her circle (I'm not sure of that). Came to the US in 1945 as a consular attaché in New York City, defected from Poland's Communist regime in 1948. Died of cancer in 1957 in New York. An important part of his output were operas.

As far as I've been able to ascertain, none of his works have ever been released on CD! :o (His 4 Copernican Motets Op.19 for choir were once released on LP though ::))

The Concerto is in 3 movements:

1st movement

2nd movement

3rd movement

(I'm not sure if the ".mp3" extension hasn't been cut off in the upload process - you ought to rename the files to fix that.) EDIT: fixed

Words are by Tadeusz Miciński.

The performers:
Katarzyna Oleś-Blacha, soprano
Polish Radio Orchestra
Piotr Wajrak, conductor

Maciek

Just one more post here tonight... ;D

Major Discovery of the Year No. 2 is Andrzej Koszewski's Concerto grosso for string orchestra from 1947. Nothing really modern about the piece - just some truly beautiful, old fashioned string writing. Anyone who likes Barber's Adagio will be spellbound, I promise!

Performed by the Polish Radio Orchestra in Cracow, conducted by Stanisław Has:
http://www.mediafire.com/?9xweoxcymf9

And André asked me for some more Włodzimierz Kotoński the other day, so here are 2 more pieces:

Sirocco for orchestra, performed by the Polish Radio Orchestra conducted by Wojciech Michniewski (with a title like that you're bound to like it)
http://www.mediafire.com/?9lemb6dvyeo

and
Zatarty ślad for tape - a piece dedicated to the memory of Karol Szymanowski (IIRC, it was commissioned for the same concert as Szymański's Sonata)
http://www.mediafire.com/?0tbuyje9lbx

(BTW, André, I do remember the Perkowski songs I promised - perhaps I'll upload them tomorrow?)

Lilas Pastia

Coincidentally, my car listening of this week includes a work called Epitaph for Karol Szymanowski (1937). A really striking piece by Tadeusz Szeligowski. Another work of his that immediately became a favourite is his concerto for orchestra. This composer writes in a frankly tonal idiom, but includes some harsh dissonances. The orchestration is impressively varied, but veers toward the somber and greyish. This suits the Epitaph's subject of course. The Concerto is more kaleidoscopic and varied in mood.

"Discovery of the year" for me applies to the whole vast corpus of polish works I've listened to so far  :D (the equivalent of a dozen discs), with about twice as much already in the can and waiting to be given a few spins.

Maciek

Ah, well, there are discoveries and major discoveries. I would count these as major because they came from composers I knew nothing about (Kassern) or thought little of (Koszewski).

Of course, these are major discoveries in the radio broadcast category. I could spill out a long list of discoveries in other realms... Like Pierné, or Alfven, or Pulkkis, or Leifs. Oh, I could go on... But won't. It's bedtime over here. ;)

(Items of special interest are highlighted.)

1) For those who do not peruse the What are you listening to thread - here's Marek Drewnowski playing Scarlatti and Kisielewski's PC:

Stefan Kisielewski - Piano Concerto

2) For those who are interested in electronic music and somehow missed Symphonien's link in one of the Polish composers threads (lots of Kotonski over here!):
http://www.ubu.com/sound/polish.html

3) For those who want more Lason:
Aleksander Lason - Chamber Music No. 2 from 1976 (musicians of the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra with the composer conducting)
http://www.mediafire.com/?21ccdy4owdn
Aleksander Lason - Concerto Pablo Casals in memoriam (a Cello Concerto of sorts) from 1985, performed by Roman Jabłoński (cello) and the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antoni Wit.
http://www.mediafire.com/?ecenlno4tta

4) For those who want more Mykietyn:
Pawel Mykietyn - Shakespeare's Sonnets (2000) for male soprano and piano. Jacek Laszczkowski male soprano, Maciej Grzybowski piano.
http://www.mediafire.com/?9an12dblvl2
This piece has made quite a career and is currently probably one of Mykietyn's most famous. As usual: I find it enjoyable but ultimately quite a bit superficial and shallow. But judge for yourselves (OTOH, I feel it might still become a postmodern classic).

5) For those who want even more Perkowski, here is his song cycle to words by Safo (in Polish translation) from 1967 - Safo's Songs. It's for soprano, 2 flutes and 2 clarinets. The singer is Bożena Betley.
http://www.mediafire.com/?31gyuxqcw3y

6) And now for my third (and last) major radio discovery so far this year. Zbigniew Rudziński's breathtakingly beautiful, extremely melodious song cycle to Rilke's Book of Hours in Mieczysław Jastrun's translation (1983-4). It's called, simply, From the Book of Hours. If Knapik's song cycle (posted earlier in this thread and still downloadable) is a sort of over-expressive Mahler-meets-Berg contraption (not a very good description but whatever), then this is a sort of stripped down, pensive Mahler, reminiscent of the Rückert-Lieder perhaps. The piece is scored for mezzosoprano and string trio (!). The performers are Anna Malewicz-Madey and the New Warsaw Trio. I've managed to identify the English and German titles of three of the songs (I'm guessing the proper English titles by looking through contents of several Rilke collections on amazon): 1. I'm living just as the century ends (Ich lebe grad, da das Jahrhundert geht), 3. Put out my eyes and I can see you still/Extinguish Thou my eyes (Lösch mir die Augen aus), 5. Lord, it is time (Herbsttag).
http://www.mediafire.com/?eo5dykly3yw
And as a bonus, a song for soprano and string orchestra to the words by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. Zbigniew Rudziński - Strings on earth (1982). Performed by Małgorzata Armanowska and the Polish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jerzy Maksymiuk.
http://www.mediafire.com/?emy1gncltx1

7) And finally, to round off this feast of vocal music:
Zygmunt Mycielski - Brzezina (Birchwood). A song with a strong folk tilt to words by Iwaszkiewicz. Performed by Małgorzata Armanowska and Szabolcs Esztenyi (piano).
http://www.mediafire.com/?61ooiynocom
There, seven sections (lucky number ;)) - that's enough for one day, don't you think? But when will someone else contribute to this thread? It used to be thriving! :'(
