Quote from: Mandryka on August 14, 2024, 08:16:23 AMI practically lived there at one time, 1990s. It used to owned by Poles -- I remember the aggressive lady behind the till, and fabulous borscht and strudel and potato pancakes with sour cream and various varieties of vodka. Then about 15 years ago or maybe more, it was bought out by a chain, Hungarians, or at least I think they're Hungarians. One thing I really don't like about it now is that it's cold in Winter -- they just don't have good heating.

There's another good Polish restaurant near Imperial, in the Polish Club.
Interesting! I always go for the meatballs and Polish beer. My family had some Polish au-pair girls in my youth and they often went to the 'Polish Pilot's Club'; I wonder if it is the same place that you mentioned.

I think that Daquise may have been *repurchased by the original owner's family.  I stumbled across this article (don't know how accurate it is):  https://somethingcurated.com/2018/05/17/the-enduring-appeal-of-londons-oldest-polish-restaurant-daquise/

p.s. I love pierogis!  The rest of their menu sounds quite tasty too.

p.p.s.  Hope to listen to Jeffrey's concert this weekend.

This was an outdoor festival, with a lot of K-pop. The Daejeon Philharmonic came out and did some crowd pleasers (William Tell Overture), and Choi came out for two pieces: Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen (transcribed as a flute concerto, probably by Choi herself) and some piece she played at the Olympic opening ceremony. Annoyingly, we couldn't sit close because many people left a bag or something on their chair for dibs and then left because K-pop artists weren't on the stage.

Having 'mis-expected' a full concert, my wife, mother-in-law and I then went to a bar I knew in the area and had some mead.

Tonight, after playing Jürg Frey's hour-long String Quartet No. 4 last night, the Bozzini Quartet will perform this program:

Klaus Lang: the long field, 2024 (World Premiere)
Bekah Simms: Songs for Fallow Fields, 2023-24
James Tenney: Koan for String Quartet, 1984

This evening is part of the TIME:SPANS Festival, one of the best of its type for contemporary music aficionados.

Quote from: ultralinear on August 25, 2024, 09:59:24 AMDaquise gets a 5-star review in today's Sunday Times (behind a paywall, alas.)

However the review is tinged with regret, because after mentioning the 77-year history, the reviewer (who loved everything about it) says:

Sounds like maybe some sort of campaign is called for.

Sad news thanks - coincidentally I bought a copy of the Sunday Times and will look out for the article.

Booked me some tickets yesterday for my November trip to Vienna: Mahler 8 (Wiener Symphoniker/Philippe Jordan et al.) and a trio of operas: Don Pasquale, Billy Budd and Madama Butterfly. A few more concerts to be booked by the end of the month and I'll be set until February.

Crumbs!  I missed it.  I have the website open on another tab.  Is it possible to "listen again"?  It looks like that they have other concerts listed there...perhaps they'll post it later?  Or am I missing it?

Yes, it appears to be available right now, here. And have to say, the whole concert is well worth a listen!

2 days ago the radio played a concert from the Elb Philharmonie under Manfred Honeck. The main work was Bruckner's 9th, but the opening item was Moussa's Elysium, another recent work from this composer. Well worth hearing.

I saw that live earlier this year! Thought it was outstanding. The Bruckner was the draw, originally, but I liked Moussa's piece, too, coupled with great photography of the neighborhood around the hall.

Looking forward to celebrating Schoenberg's 150th birthday tomorrow with Gurrelieder, live with Alan Gilbert and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg.

That sucks, David ☹️.

I could have attended today's concert of Gurrelieder (Montreal Symphony, Rafael Payare), but am too tired, short of time (working tomorrow morning) and the tickets are vastly overpriced. But still : Gurrelieder...
