Me too, got the same message, though it seems Sony (who else?) is the real culprit here.

Quite impressed with what I've recently discovered at Sainsbury's Entertainment - all Naxos singles for £3.99, double Deccas and EMI GROCs for £4.99 and other goodies such as Wigglesworth's Shostakovich 5, 6 & 10 for £21.99 (£51.95 on Amazon!).  All with free delivery.

2 days later... even more impressed now as the site says "Usually despatched within 11 working days" - my order arrived next working day.

amazon.ca just advised me that the (obviously mis-priced) Beethoven 87 disc box I ordered in March is not available.

This post will be controversial and I doubt many people here will bother with it. I expect some backlash as well.  But if you are looking for the ultimate bargain then this is unbeatable:

the Krauss Ring 1953 (Archipel) can be Downloaded, yes that's right Downloaded  :o for £7.98 from amazon.co.uk or for a little over $10!!!  You might argue that it is not CD quality, my response would be this is a historical mono recording, it is not made for audiophiles plus it is in DRM free mp3 format 256 kbps variable bit rate which is tolerable, in fact I find it more than acceptable but that's just me!

Now why am I recommending it, well it has the perfect cast! Hans Hotter is at his best as Wotan/Wanderer far better than he was for Solti, Windgassen and Varnay are also in top form as Siegfried and Brunhilde. The performance is electrifying!! ....... And all this for £7.98 I tell you this is the best Ring bargain on the market!

Finally you will need a device that can support gapless  playback, all current iPods fit the bill!

There is nothing controversial with the Krauss Ring from '53. It is often regarded, arguably of course, as the best Ring ever recorded. The only controversy/question is if this is the right recording in terms of sonics. There are several versions of this out there. I have the Opera d'Oro release, which is pretty good considering the age (and seemed to be the best sounding at the time it came out). There was a more recent one - Orfeo? - but I have not heard that one (or any of the others).
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

The Archipel remastering is the only one that I have heard as it was the super-duper cheap one of the lot in mp3 format. I can not comment on the other remasterings as I have not heard them. From what I have read the Archipel is one of the newer remasterings.  I find the sound crisp and the glorious voices of Hotter and Varnay come across very clearly. Granted the sound of the orchestra is quite recessed but I have learned to live with that.  Either way at the price of £7.98 for 14.1 hours of music this a winner!

Wow, that's better than getting a Lady Gaga album for $0.99.   :)

Well that's not my ultimate bargain find, this is!  And hey after almost two years it is still there for the same price! :)

$7 for a 4 cd set worth of mp3s.

Hmm... any chance MP3 bargains could be a separate thread? No offense meant, but I have no interest in them whatsoever and this was proving to be such a useful source...

But it's sort of a let-down to see this thread with a new post and then see links to MP3s. ;D

You could start a "Super-Cheap Downloads" thread.

I see: a little effort in order to pursuit some future happiness. It would be a wise attitude.  :)

Done and done. Again, no ill will to any contributors (quite the opposite: have picked up a host of great deals from this thread), but one or more of you guessed correctly. The recurring let-down upon discovering that some prospective purchase or other was in fact a bunch of MP3s was too much to bear without comment or action.  ;)

Amozon UK has offered a pre-release deal on a set of Mozart Operas conducted by John Eliot Gardiner for £33-99 which seems quite a lot less than other places at the moment.
