Not up to the standard of their spring/summer giveaways, which included Herreweghe in Schubert and Beethoven, Virgil Boutellis-Taft, Gade violin sonatas etc. but Qobuz currently have a few free jazz compilations: https://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/search?q=winter-music-gifts-2020.  A bit of background while cooking Christmas lunch, perhaps,

Black Friday madness at Qobuz until the end of the week, including several Naxos things I've bought recently at higher prices (don't we love that feeling) - Petrenko's Shostakovich cycle for under £10, Märkl's Debussy likewise (not universally favourably reviewed, but more "complete" than any other complete Debussy), Engeset's Grieg cycle, which I would urge on anyone that doesn't have it, complete Hindemith string quartets for around a fiver...  Best way to see them all is to scroll down to "Classical x Black Friday", which seems to include everything from all the other categories.

That Petrenko Shostakovich deal sounds amazing!

It still shows as a Black Friday page but they have all gone back to their full prices sadly, Jeffrey.

Yes, Qobuz were a bit behind themselves this week - earlier they had a "Cyber Monday - 80% off!" banner up, while all the deals were the same as the Black Friday ones (up to 60% off).  But the Shostakovich is proving very enjoyable - I started with no.9, which comes across as a big, tragic symphony in Petrenko's hands, then got 12 out of the way fairly quickly (OK, the first movement is very exciting and if, as the story goes, it was written in 3 days, it's better than anyone else could do in that time), then nos.2 and 3, neither of which I knew well, and which seem to share a lot of the restless inventiveness of no.4.  (Perhaps they would get more performances if they didn't have the jolly revolutionary choral finales.)  So maybe no.11 next, a favourite of yours, Jeffrey, I know, and not one that has ever made much impression on me before.

Absolutely great box set!  :)

It includes a disc with texts in pdf.

Some offers in Europe around 75-80€.
I'll pass this time though.

The new erato

Definitely to be recommended but I have all these operas as single editions, most of them in the same performances included in the box. The definitive way to go if you are looking for a way into this wonderful music, and a good overview of the various styles of baroque opera. It's rather wrongheaded to group this into a common term, after all we are talking about a period of 120 years and many different national scools and traditions.

Don't know about the inclusion of texts here, though you probably won't understand the action in large parts og some of them anyhow, a synopsis will often suffice.

Actually, the box maker shared your concerns. The texts are divided into 4 smaller books for different countries (national schools).

A number of hears ago, I remember wanting to purchase this set:  and found that it had gone OOP...the usual "Limited Edition" and went to the trouble and expense of purchasing it used on eBay for what I thought was a very good price.  I think that it was maybe a year later that it suddenly appeared again--new.  So much for "Limited Edition"!  Thankfully, I was smart and didn't pay stupid money for it, but I was still quite annoyed with the record label.

Gunter Neuhold, a name I don't know, his complete digital CD set of Wagner's Ring is available from Amazon UK second hand for £1,63 plus a little postage. I am tempted, but I don't think I need yet another Ring. Here is a cheap way to explore it.

There is one detailed review which seems well balanced if you want to read what someone who has heard it thinks.

There are no star singers, Richard Cook I have heard and he is good, he is the tenor in two of the operas.

Might tempt someone here.

I have that set and it's quite good, actually. A real concept runs through it, orchestral playing is entirely adequate and most of the cast sings well and characterizes the music very believably.

For those interested, the Chandos website has 60 % off on Naxos CDs and Download. The FLAC work out at £2.30 for the single CDs.

They also have a January Sale on another 3000+ titles.
