Brilliant Classics complete Bach for 70 quid: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bach-Complete-157-DVD-Rom/dp/B003MRN6PY/

and Harnoncourt Cantatas box for 115 euros: http://www.amazon.fr/Sacred-Cantatas-Harnoncourt-Leonhardt-Set/dp/B000RZOR2U/

By clicking on the Harnoncourt link I spotted in the suggestions Murray Perahia Complete Mozart Piano Concertos which via Marketplace came to a little under £18 delivered.  A three disc set of Perahia playing the Bach Concertos is available for 9-99 Euros plus delivery as appropriate.

Opus106

Borders have sent me a 50% off coupon, which I would love to use, but two problems:
1. I can't find many many sets I'd like to buy
2. I can't find any sets I'd like to buy AND they have in stock!

I wonder if I should try a backorder?!? Anyone ever have luck with that? What recent sets would people recommend?

I know that this has been discussed before, but can someone tell me what the cutoff is in terms of how much you have to buy to make MDT worth the shipping to the states? Thanks. :)

Depends what you are buying. Mdt charges per disc. If it is cheaper than other sites/stores, then it is worth it.

Oh, ok. I was thinking that if you bought a certain amount then it made it worth it. Maybe I was thinking of some place else.

I wish I had similar problems. ;)

Yeah you were thinking of jpc.  I usually put in small orders with mdt and large orders with jpc*. :)

Edit:* the usual only applies to mdt since I've ordered from jpc only twice.

MDT shipping is close to linear with the number of discs, so the price advantage is not too sensitive to the number of discs.  But there are certain labels (like BIS) which are expensive in the US and may be cheaper to get from MDT.

JPC is a place with a steep initial shipping cost, which only makes sense with a big order.  There may be others.

Presto Classical counts a box set as one item while MDT counts the box set according to the number of CD's in the set to some degree.

I clearly recall your first order from JPC, but I don't know if we were properly informed about the second one.  8)

You know we must be strict on CDCDCD matters.  ;D

That's because a couple of weeks ago I remembered that I did order from them before!  The Bach edition, I waited a month for it to arrive since it was so big.  I ordered it from a store in Germany, and I think that was them. :)

Really? I have ordered 4 or 5 times from MDT. Each time they charged me a flat rate of £5.99 shipping. There were a mix of single disks and box sets each time, totaling <>8-10 disks each order. Never anything other than that though... :-\

That has been my observation - a box set does not count as one item when it comes to shipping and I have ordered exactly 100 times from MDT since early 2009.  A good number of my orders had total shipping close to £10.  My average order size with MDT is 6 items where a box set is counted as one item.

No mystery to it.  The policy is spelled out.

for the US

Quoteadd £1.25 for the first CD, thereafter 75p
add £3.00 per book

The only complication is that multi-disc sets get charged according to equivalent weight, which is unpredictable.    My most recent order was a single BIS cd, £7.92 plus £1.25 shipping, or £9.17 total.  That's $14.88.   Amazon charges $2.99 to ship anything, so I'd have to find it for less than $11.90, which is hard to do for a typical BIS cd.

Ok, So far I found two:
1. J Strauss complete Orchestral edition ($77.50 at half price + tax)
2. Bax symphonies Handley ($31+ tax)

The Bax has been on my wishlist longer, but the Strauss seems like a pretty amazing deal. A lot of Strauss even though I am interested. Meanwhile, still looking...

Handley set is a little clinical/detailed rather than passionate, but still good.  And it includes an interview disc which you might enjoy. :)

I got the Jochum complete Bruckner set on EMI (half price=$32 + tax)
The other contenders were the complete set of Mozart concertos with Julia Fischer which Pentatone released in January (which was previously available as individual CDs), and the Capucon/Braley Beethoven violin sonatas.;  after finding those three it was getting late, and I was tired of searching.

The Borders website doesn't make searching easy.  To find the Fischer, you can't query under her name or the conductors (Kreizberg), but have to search for Mozart violin concertos,  then look for a set released by Pentatone in January 2011,  without a cover image, or any artist's names,   and then presume that's the Fischer set.

I had back orders from them last year; the system worked reasonably well, although some of the stuff that it was would be available in 2-4 weeks was not shipped until the end of week 4; on the other hand some of it was shipped within 2 weeks.  I didn't order anything that listed as being available only after a longer period, and this is my first order with them since they went into bankruptcy, so I have no idea of how well their back order system currently works.

Found this for $42.30 USD shipped from amazon.co.uk. Not sure if it's a super deal, but it was good enough to make me pull the trigger.
