This isn't new but I would like to point out that the 4CD Box of the Lindsay Quartet's Schubert recordings is still £9.83 on Amazon UK. It's ever so good.

I expect its those "Lurkers" we see on the forum, who read this thread for nabbing a bargain or two.  At the time of posting there were 4 copies left from the MP supplier.

Nobody from the forum's admitted to purchasing them  ;)

I can buy the complete set of Mozart symphonies, an 11 disc set, The English Concert, with Trevor Pinnock from this guy in Winnipeg on Kijiji for $20 CDN.

Should I?  How are these performances?

I do enjoy some, David.  Some.  I'll go for it, regardless - at that price!

I don't have a whole lot to offer but many years ago I did manage to hear a decent cross-section of Pinnock's early Mozart symphonies and I found the performances excellent: lively, nicely inflect, and just good fun. But I've never owned these recordings.

Unfortunately the opposite was true with the lone disc of Pinnock's late Mozart symphonies (syms 40 and 41) I once owned but recently sold off: limp, bland, and an overall impression that there was a high level of disinterest in even recording the works. Probably the worst recordings I've ever heard of these two great symphonies. In fact, this disc actually make me angry that I had wasted good money on it. If ever I felt I deserved a refund due to being so poorly served by a recording this was it. >:( ;D

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Thanks both for your feedback.  Fortunately, I already do have great recordings of Mozart's final 5 symphonies, so that won't be a problem.  I don't have symphonies 1-35, so that's why this set at the price just seems like a no-brainer.

Yeah, this set might be worth it for the early and middle symphonies. Not hearing Pinnock in anything "middle" Mozart I can't really say but at that price it's a pretty good deal.

I've had the Pinnock box set for a couple of years.  If you are happy with HIP it is highly recommended, and even more so at that price.  I'd agree with reservations about the late symphonies, but you have indicated that these are covered in your collection.

I recently bought the Gardiner version of the 39th and 41st on SDG - very enjoyable, although few super duper bargains around.

While I love Pinnock's work, and would ordinarily jump at this set, I don't think I could quite leap over Mackerras' sparkling complete Telarc set, nor his incomplete Linn set to make it happen.
