Quote from: The new erato on March 31, 2012, 02:45:56 AMWell, I thought this thread was about giving other members hints about potential interesting purchases, and in return getting their feedback in case they had something to contribute. I would have given info on the content if I had them. If you have nothing to contribute on Sinopoli it's OK by me. Making a case of me not listing what isn't available certainly isn't helpful or a positive contribution to what this thread is about.

See Opus106's post above. Why didn't you post that image? Or type a list of the contents in your post? Or at the very least include a link to the relevant page? Why not do any of these basic things for the people whose assistance you are asking for?

I don't know how he did that. I did try it several times. I guess in the future I will keep the good bargains I find to myself. Simple as that. People like you don't deserve any assistance in picking up good bargains. If I wanted help on it I would have posted it in another thread (eg the "considering" thread). This will be my last post in this thread, rest assured!

This 16 CD set is available at a ridiculous price on amazon.it. Any comments on the recordings?

A great and very individual Zarathustra that M and I both love. Superb Bruckner. Sinopoli's Elgar is among my favorites. I have about two-thirds of the contents of this box but I may get it anyway for the long out of print Lou Salomé. I've been looking for a inexpensive used copy but have had no luck. Thanks for pointing this out.

One can often be put off by just one unappreciative and ill-considered response - but perhaps I could balance that by clearly stating, for the record, that my own library of CDs owes a great deal to your tips, bargain-spottings and general recommendations, erato - for which I'm very grateful. I'm sure others feel the same; and I'd personally be very sorry if you stopped doing it.

Let this tempest in a teapot pass then. But serioulsy, life would be simpler if the record companies could be bothered to supply listings of the contents of their offerings.

Me too. A lot of the discs posted here go to my wishlist. Many of them are still there, but many have also found their way to a good home, where they are well looked after. :)

See Opus106's post above. Why didn't you post that image?

It will not be apparent from casual browsing; the link to the image is buried within the page's source code. You should be happy that erato was good enough to share the information -- a sufficient amount to locate the item easily, I should add -- with the rest of us. If I was interested, I'd go to the store and purchase it. It's as simple as that.

And as already stated, this is just a thread for pointing out good bargains to fellow members. If opinion is what is required, it usually goes into the 'Recordings you're considering' or the composer/performer/genre-specific threads, unless mentioned otherwise.

True. And I like to point out that nobody "owes" anything to anybody here - so we take each other's contributions how they are, or leave them.

The complete Karajan on DG (excluding opera), 82 CDs and 200 page booklet:

Also there's an 117 CD Karajan collection on Membran (last seen on amazon.it) containing all his pre 1960 recordings.

Haven't seen content lists on any of these.

I suspect this is another version of the box issued last year in South Korea.

Not to mention this 240 CD box from Japan. Probably not a bargain, I've just seen it referred to elsewhere.

The Hyperion label, at their website, is having a sale on everything Schubert. If you buy enough to get te 25% discount, some not bad prices. The complete Song set can be had for just under 95 pounds.

On Amazon.com right now EMI's Ralph Vaughan Williams 30cd box set is available for $35:

I've been waiting to find an opportunity to explore RVW. It looks like this is it.

For those wanting a review of these works, see: http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2010/Nov10/RVW_collector_2066362.htm

A great choice! At that price I would urge the curious to try. A few of the performances are not in state of the art sound, but all of the music is wonderful and there are many discoveries to be made.

This may not be the best deal around, but Presto has just launched a 20% off Naxos, bringing standard single CDs down to $6.80.  Whilst better prices can be had at Amazon MP, when postage is added in I still find Presto's shipping to the US to be the best deal.
