The Beethoven symphonies under Barenboim with his East West Divan orchestra can be had for less than 25$. Brand new recordings, not a reissue. I bought it today out of curiosity. I didn't like Barenboim's previous Beethoven recordings from Berlin. Too rounded and lacking vitality. Hopefully this will be better

A little off topic, but Arrested Development, a series some of you talk about, is on sale for one day only at $27 at Amazon (I'll post this in the Diner as well):

This, I think, would qualify as border-line super bargain.

And just as the Edition is about to be released: the set of Shostakovich symphonies conducted by Barshai is going for ~ 13 Pounds (ex. VAT) at Amazon UK. (Not implying causation or anything, of course... simply noting the facts.)

And while you're at it, you may also like to consider Bernstein's NY Mahler for a similar price from the MP.  [That's my best impression of Amazon algorithms. 0:)]

Presumably the same performances as

which is 20.51 Euros at Amazon Spain (before shipping and handling, and I think JCP is higher for s/h, at least to the US)

Much cheaper (including postage) from Amazon UK.

Oops.
Ha!  It's not cheaper on Amazon UK

26.xx GBP plus s/h.
Amazon UK may work out cheaper for those who can get free shipping, but here to the US that's not the case.
ETA--Amazon UK would be about 4 GBP for shipping,  Amazon Spain  12 Euros.  That's a difference but not enough to make up the price differential on the set itself.

Not anymore since the stupid Fed has announced the QE3.  Have you noticed the Dollar has dropped into the toilet even against the once sickly Euro?

just checked.  1 USD equals approximately 1.3 Euros (1.31 to be precise) and approximately 1.6 GBP (1.62 to be precise).  It's been close enough to those figures for all the time I've been ordering from overseas for me to use that as a default approximation whenever I place an order in Euros or Pounds.

Ordering from Amazon Spain, I'd be paying about $42US.  Ordering from AmazonUK, I'd be paying about $48US.

And even without bringing in US currency,  33 Euros is less than 30 Pounds.

If I did the math correctly, ordering from Amazon Spain in GBP but shipping to the US would come out to 26.5 GBP--that is, almost the same price as Amazon UK before shipping is added in.

BTW, am I the only person whose mind reverts to Cunard liners when hearing about QE2 and QE3?

Bottomline, the deals are not as good as they used to be.  The average Pound/Dollar exchange rate I have been used to was £1 = $1.56

bigshot

Whether or not it's a deal depends on the difference in cost shipped between Amazon us and the euro Amazons, not necessarily the exchange rate.

(I'm being a little obsessive tonight.)

In this particular case, AmazonUS does not have it in stock;  AmazonUS Marketplace sellers have it for 45.36USD, which means with the 2.98 s/h it would be almost exactly the same as AmazonUK  and therefore more than Amazon Spain.  I'm not obsessive enough to check out AmazonItaly or AmazonGermany.

ETA: Of course, your comment is, as a general observation, completely accurate.

Value of £1 directly before QE3 was announced: $1.612. Value of £1 now: $1.621.

Before QE3 was announced, it was $1.56 early last week.  Obviously, the exchange rate becomes a more important factor when you ara a big buyer ...

As a financial planner I often get stupid questions like 'Is it the right time to buy USD ? Or Euros? Should I convert now?

Hah! The only thing that's riskier to forecast than interest rates is currency rates. I always tell my clients 'if you need it now then buy it now'. Over the long run it will make no difference as you'll be lucky - and congratulate yourself 50% of the time and blame your banker for the other 50% where you were wrong ;).

Follow you heart's desire and the current availability of what you covet vs the trend that tends to make the latter obsolete faster than a speeding bullet. If you like it, who cares how much you paid for it?
