Amazon's low price guarantee states that they will not charge you a price which is higher than the lowest price they offered on the item between your order and you shipment.  They did not charge you anything, so they did not violate this guarantee.

By cancelling the order they also did not violate the guarantee as well.  Whats happened has happened - it was worth a try.

Anyway, I found out about this price on a French blog: http://bons-plans-classique.blogspot.com/,
and they are also discussing the order cancellations for this item as well.  Thank goodness for Google Translate!

Tha way I read his letter, they are saying that they cannot, by law, sell something below cost. I'm sure that the rationale is that this practice would be anti-competitive or something like that. It's EU, not US. Actually, that sounds fair to me. AN error was made and they are trying to rectify it. I'm sure they don't want to piss you off, but also sure they don't want to piss off the law dogs either!    $:)

Given that it is an international transaction, it might be considered "dumping."  The US has imposed tariffs on Chinese-made solar panels because it is claimed they are being sold below cost, which could be interpreted as an attempt to put US solar panel manufacturers out of business and eliminate competition.

Agreed.

Ultimately, the moral of the story is that retailers, be it brick and mortar or electronic, need to correctly price their products from the outset.

Not sure if any of you were aware of this but a huge Amazon MP seller had incorrectly listed most of their inventory last night and, needless to say, I took full advantage. All recordings were going for $1 and $2 including box sets. :o Did anyone else besides myself and Greg (GSMoeller) catch this?

Ironically, a set which is dirt-cheap at actual market price: the Kuchar Nielsen symphonies set.

I already own it, Karl. :) Thanks for the mention of the set. I personally don't much care for it. I like Schonwandt, Chung, and Bernstein in Nielsen the most.

This probably doesn't apply to i deals, but it does the Philips and Mozart 111 boxes. Suppose they're jacking the best sellers list. They put a ridiculous price on an expensive box set, get a million orders, then cancel them all. Until Amazon's system recognizes all the cancellations, the box is prominently displayed at the top of the best sellers list on the classical cd page on Amazon. Perhaps cancellations don't even register in the best seller system. I remember the Supraphon Dvorak box was showing up as a best seller weeks after its price had quadrupled.

We're not talking about Amazon directly, we're talking about an individual seller, which thrive on customer feedback. If a customer had a lot of negative feedback, then they won't be doing much business. It's really that simple. Do you eat at a restaurant that has consistently bad health food scores? Probably not since here in the US they would shut them down in a heartbeat. Amazon has pulled the chain from large MP sellers before and they can do it again.

This occasionally comes down to the mid-20s (Pounds) at Amazon UK. Better deal if you wish to avoid Spain's delivery charges.

Not sure how that would work though, its Amazon that has reduced the price rather than Decca & DG.  Whats in it for Amazon? Lots of refund processing and a few customers who will moan if its not honoured, a probable loss if it is honoured.  If we assume Decca / DG have done a deal the Philips box would have been honoured.

Decca and DG must love it though, like you say its free publicity.  My Philips box should arrived tomorrow from Amazon.uk at full whack, so hoping thats good karma for some i-deals.

The new erato

Well, amazon.es; after annuling the Philips box due to a mistake in the pricing, now informs me that the same has happened with the Mozart 111 box......

Interesting goings-on in the CD world - or just plain stupidity?

I just pulled the trigger on this one earlier today, for 15 dollars. Guess I was too late for the giveaways which were apparently going on!  :(

Mine was just dumb luck;  I was unaware at the time of The Great Kerfuffle.

I love reviews of operas that never once mention the quality of the singers or orchestra.
