I found Nielsen's chamber music to not be as musically interesting as his orchestral works. In fact, with the exception of the fine Wind Quintet, I would say most of that music is a bore.

Good deals!

Thank you for that - the Berg box is very tempting.  Some would be duplicates for me, but as usual these days, it's cheaper to buy these big boxes than to fill in one's gaps with individual discs.

Ooh-err - does anyone have a different opinion?  I want to say Violin Sonatas! for a start.

Violin Sonatas definitely, Serenata in vano possibly, the F major Quartet (Op. 44, but nowhere near as late as that) is charming if lightweight and the F minor Quartet (Op. 5) is also worthwhile—the other two and the quintet have not made much of an impression on me so far—and from the piano music how can anyone resist the 'Luciferan' Suite Op. 45? The three piano pieces Op. 59 are a miniature masterpiece, as well. I don't know the organ music or songs. But it occurs to me that I can't think of very much music by Nielsen I seriously dislike, actually.

I agree with MI but not as strongly.  I just think that they are not as musically interesting as his orchestral works.  Still worth hearing, and at that price I would pull the trigger.

Certainly a great price, but has anybody heard of any of the performers? The only one I know is David Zinman.  If the others are reputable, it would be a no-brainer for me...

Yeah, I went for it. At Amazon UK it is dirt cheap. I figure I will find some good music in it or at the very least get exposure to pieces I can expand upon later.  The rest of the discs can be part of the dwarven mines my son is building for his Hobbit lego figures.....  >:D

Edit: Cancelled the order after reading Brian's post. Yikes! My son will be disappointed. ....  >:D

Yeah, me too. $30 including shipping for 40 cds? Definitely worth a little gamble.  Thanks for the tip ;)

If the Amado JS Bach box is any guide, it will be a mix of the fabulously good, and the middling;  and at that price point, probably a good risk::reward.

You may find that a few minor gems enclosed (like Rodion Shchedrin playing his own piano music) are worth the low price, but I would advise you not to compromise your integrity by purchasing this set.

Many of the performers are well-known in the Obscure European Budget Labels circuit. Anton Nanut is perfectly competent, as is Bystrik Rezucha; Zdenek Kosler and Dubravka Tomsic are interesting, important artists, and Tomsic's Scarlatti CD available for about $2 on Amazon is viewed as a classic by Scarlatti lovers here. Viktor Yampolsky and Howard Griffiths are surprising inclusions too. I have verified that the presence of Peter Pears is a real recording, but I think it's live and from the '50s. The State Philharmonic Orchestra of Kosice is a real orchestra with a terrible, terrible track record on disc.

The real problem is that many of the recordings originate from a scam run by a record producer named Alfred Scholz. I see the names Alfred Scholz, Alberto Lizzio, Cesare Cantieri, London Festival Orchestra, Suddeutsche Philharmonie, Junge Suddeutsche Philharmonie, Munich Symphonics, Tubingen Medical Orchestra, and Henry Adolph, all of which are completely bogus. Additionally, Scholz used the names of some real artists in his scam, and Dubravka Tomsic has complained publicly about fake recordings being released under her name. And finally, Ulf Hoelscher is credited as playing the piano, which is alarming because he is a violinist.

Tubingen Medical Orchestra,
Really???? As in concerto for two bedpans?

One should think that a scam artist could come up with something more attractive than this!!

I know some of the names for sure. Some of the stuff looks good, some a wild ass guess.
