A wonderful set. I collected these one by one, and enjoyed all of them. I hope you do too.
Yes, I was just on the verge on posting something similar. I'm on disc 4 of the set (it has taken me a good time to come this far, but it's not the fault of the music.

And re boxes increasing in price: I bought the Liszt at around 100 Euros at amazon italy a year (or so) ago.

arrived yesterday for under GBP40 - have only listened to one Schütz disc so far, which is excellent, but looking forward to just about everything in the box.  A few notes for potential purchasers:

  • It's big! - much bigger than the standard CD cube - 15cm cubed so (given my shelving system) will need to be housed somewhere separately.
  • There are some very welcome and unexpected fill-ups not listed on the Amazon UK contents that someone has posted (although they're there on Presto's site, had I looked) - e.g. the Mozart string trio disc also includes his arrangements of Bach preludes & fugues, the Missa Longa is coupled with 5 short motets, etc.
  • The 245-page booklet is all English, not multilingual duplicate notes; if they're not the complete notes from the original issues, they're pretty close.
  • The booklet is generally well-produced, although there are one or two oddities - first among these being the attribution of the entire Utopia Triumphans disc (Spem in alium, Ecce beatam lucem... to Haydn.

Altogether, the best bargain for me (admittedly not a big purchaser) since the Lumières box.

Same type of booklet  and nearly the same size as the Living Stereo box (which I just got, have had the Vivarte for some time - Vivarte is a bit smaller ... and yeah, I'm really not sure what's the rationale behind all that "stuffing" ... I prefer the no-nonsense approach Sony took with the Verdi "Great Recordings", Verdi at the Met or Leon Fleisher boxes, for instance - but none of those is quite as big anyway).

I was on the fence for a long time about the Vivarte box, took a price drop to 40€ or so eventually when I went for it. Plenty of good stuff to discover (I guess I've played half to two-thirds of it), but I guess I'm more into it for the rarities than the more widely recorded pieces, where I think my favourites will be other recordings. But really, it's a treasure trove indeed and there's tons of good stuff in it!

I don't need it either because I have almost everything.  Missing only the Tchaikovsky, which I want, and the Haydn, which I do not want.  And the Beethoven,  but I have his other two DG cycles.

And this cycle is the 70s one which isn't the best IMHO

Yeah, I know that ... but I've got so much stuff around, no need for entire boxes where I have a hunch beforehand that I won't be too overjoyed by its contents ...

And they rent cars.
Why should I rent one if I don't drive? Would I be insured if I wrecked it and some other cars while trying to get out of the parking lot?

Without taking a position on Karajan, I completely agree with this in principle. I'm not interested in buying something just to pad my disc count.

I just found a used copy on Amazon in Very Good condition for $19. Maybe it's a mis-price. But I gave it a go. I have the Karajan EMI and 60s boxes, but I can't seem to muster up the enthusiasm to plunk down a couple of c-notes on the 70s box. This will probably give me all the 70s I really need.

In case you want to own additional cycles of the warhorses the Zinman Box (50 cd) is now available at Amazon.UK for about 43 GBP (lowest so far). After VAT deduction it comes out to about 39 GBP to the US w/ shipping. I have all his Beethoven and Mahler so I will nix this. However, it seems like a great deal and a SDCB item.

Periodically here we have cage-match death struggles over his Beethoven. It is excellent.

Oooh, I'm a fan of Zinman and Tonhalle.  This looks tantalizing!  :)
