Also, I think there is a tendency in classical music criticism to parrot the general consensus opinion, even when it isn't based on any kind of personal experience with the recordings. I find that a lot online, particularly with Heifetz and Karajan.

Surely that has traditionally worked to their benefit more than to their detriment.

(FTR I like Horowitz and Karajan, maybe not to the extent of their sales numbers, but I like them. Heifetz not so much, especially in his "race the orchestra" mode.)

That is a great bargain. And yet it does not tempt me. I am not sure that that is a good thing. I'd be happier if I were tempted but resolute.
My only excuse is Horowitz has never really impressed me. And there is so much mono.

  As I recall, the previous incarnation of his complete works box was selling, used, for prices like $900 just a year or two back.  At this price it seems like a no-brainer...but I'm actually trying to find ways to reduce my number of CDs these days (at a profit, of course).

Me too. I'm not tempted, but a year ago I'd have bought it.
I have way too many discs. I have culled about 100 discs to sell, but I really need to be ruthless and cull several hundred more. Singles, to free up box space.

The Sony Boulez box, which I have decide to pass on, is going for £70 at Amazon UK. That's under $100 shipped to the USA today. The best price I've seen for that.

But to my surprise - I generally dislike these hotchpotch sets - I actually like the selections. A bunch of intersting recordings sufficiently off the beaten track to be a valuable addition.

We've had this discussion before and yes, it is a thread requirement in my opinion.  I don't want download "bargains" here since downloads already have their thread.  I don't come here to get download "bargains."  I come here to get discs and that is what I expect.

I'm with the Dutchman on the point, if not quite on the tone. Keeping these separate is a good thing for casual users of the site or people who just read this thread when bargain hunting. This thread isn't just for the regulars (if the word regular can be applied to any of us!), it's for purchasers at large.

I have this set. I'm a big fan of the String Symphonies, and these are hands down the best performances of them available. This set wasn't available on CD except as part of a big box when I bought it. $12 is a bargain for this.
