Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on July 11, 2023, 01:48:00 AMWow!  Any local flooding that you've seen or heard about?

No idea what we received here, but it kept raining and raining (and hard) yesterday.

PD

Yes PD - massive flooding in Montpelier and Barre, S&R operations underway though thus far, no casualties have been reported. Highways washed out. Until a few hours ago we were isolated from the outside world due to road closures. The section of interstate (I-89) going past Montpelier was closed through this morning due to flooding and water damage but some lanes are open now. And the main road north to Montpelier from here was undercut by flood waters and collapsed - will take some time (days to weeks) to repair. Even the locally well-known bypass route (normally good gravel) is washed out close to my end and is not expected to be fixed until sometime tomorrow.

It's an absolute mess all across the state, in many areas a worse disaster than TS Irene in 2011, as T.D. wrote. I was lucky despite a local storm total that topped out at 194.5mm (about 7.65") - I'm on fairly high ground. But many businesses will have suffered major losses and it will take VT many months to recover completely.

Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on July 07, 2023, 05:34:10 AMOh, no!  Yuck!

I'm trying to pretend that I'm in London at Wimbledon.  It's currently a bit warm (84), but sunny today.

PD

p.s.  The mugginess and warm weather here have made it challenging to sleep at night (trying hard not to turn on a/c).

What's a/c? ;)

VERY few homes in VT have it - I certainly don't.

Quote from: T. D. on July 11, 2023, 11:29:31 AM'Fraid I don't know offhand.
The most recent news stories I saw were from about 2 weeks ago, saying that rainfall wasn't enough to extinguish the wildfires.

I know a lot of the US National Weather Service tools, e.g. this for precipitation totals, but nothing about the Canadian equivalent.

This is the best I could find quickly, but I don't know how many (if any) of the rainfall totals pertain to the wildfire areas. The report seems to focus on populous regions, and the flooded areas perhaps are too far south.

[Added] This somewhat encouraging news story broke yesterday:

https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/no-quebec-wildfires-considered-out-of-control-for-first-time-since-end-of-may-1.6474479

Glad that things seem to be improving in Quebec; hope that that continues.

And thank you for the precipitation website.  I'll have to bookmark it.  Ah, I see that it's NOAA.  I've visited that site before, but don't think that I've ever used it re precipitation.

Earlier this morning, I was checking out the BBC website and they had/have pictures and video of downtown Montpelier.  Man!  And apparently at least one person has died (a woman in her 40's trying to get her and her dog out of her home was swept away (This was in Orange County, NY).  https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66154757

Are you all set with food and necessary supplies to hold out?

A heatwave (the first this summer) is supposed to be hitting us this weekend.

I do envy folks who live at higher altitudes at times...that cool air--particularly in the evenings.

Forecast is not looking good for later this week for you and many others:  thunderstorms with possibly strong winds (sounds like starting sometime Thursday through next Tuesday).  :(

Well, if you're not dealing with fires, floods, or heatwaves, hopefully all is well?  Or...?

The sun has come out at Wimbledon [Shhh...don't say that above a whisper!].

I actually grew up in Reno, which is not hot.  It gets tons of snow in the winter, and is overall cool (it is at high elevation) that we didn't even have AC.

Quote from: DavidW on July 04, 2023, 06:49:22 AMOut of the pan, into the fire.  I'm going to visit family in west Texas.  Triple digit highs there.

I just escaped in time, a 107 high today when I flew back.  Yikes!  On top of it, west Texas is not as dry as usual.  It is not South Carolina humid but with triple digit highs it was not terribly comfortable.

Oh, nice!  8)

And glad that you didn't "overcook" yourself whilst visiting your family.  Hope that you had a good time?

Hoping that we don't get more flooding around here (nothing like in Vermont or places like Orange County, NY, but still not good) as more rain is forecast over the next few days (up through Tuesday I believe).

Thanks PD! Yes, I am fine and in no immediate danger. My town (Northfield) was less hard-hit than many communities, and I am well above the flood plain, making this event more of an inconvenience for me personally... though for too many folks around the state it has been a disaster. We never lost power and our water system was undamaged - so no need to boil water. The local supermarket never closed and they are well-stocked.

I had not heard about the woman you mention. Very sad. :(

Indeed, today and tomorrow will be critical as more rain is in the forecast. Nothing like the Sunday-Monday event, but it doesn't need to be to cause more damage and possible renewed flooding in hard-hit areas. As I said in my last post, I'm doing fine, thank you! My community came through relatively unscathed. As I might have posted earlier, there was a Swiftwater rescue in town on Monday as a boy who had been riding a bicycle on the one badly flooded street in town was found clinging to a tree. That street is the only one in the village wholly in the flood plain, fortunately. In another community about 3 km north of the village, a composer friend did sustain water damage as he lives right next to a brook that (of course) became a raging torrent on Monday. Sandbags and a berm, built after T.S. Irene, saved his property from much worse damage.

The worst damage in town has apparently been to the Town Forest where I hike, due to the trail system becoming a system of runoff channels, causing serious erosion. A university building called the Shaw Outdoor Center, at the base of just about the only exposed steep slope in the area (used as a sledding / toboggan run by students) narrowly escaped being buried by a mudslide. I would post a picture but do not know how to get around the size limit on this site.

Apparently she was trying to save her dog.  https://nypost.com/2023/07/11/ny-women-pamela-nugent-killed-in-flood-as-she-tried-to-save-her-dog-from-tidal-wave/

Glad to hear that you and your neighbors are doing well!

Some flooding around here, but house is o.k. (knock on wood).  A bit worried about reports of not just further rain but likelihood of strong winds.  If those start whipping up, since the ground is so waterlogged, then the possibility of big trees coming down goes way up.  Fingers crossed for all!

Thanks PD! And glad to hear that you came through ok (I'm not sure what part of NY you're in and didn't even know whether the system had affected you).

Yes, we're all concerned here about wind as well - particularly with the strong storms that are forecast to come through tonight. I'm in a fairly sheltered location and rarely see strong winds - but the tops of the trees see much more wind, and there is a tree leaning over my building that I've mentioned to the owners should be taken down, and it's especially dangerous now that the soil has been softened by the rain. Fingers crossed for both of us!

Quote from: krummholz on July 10, 2023, 01:26:28 PMWe've had 173mm of rain since yesterday evening in central Vermont. For the metrically challenged, that's close to 7"!
I've wondered how you're doing.

Quote from: JBS on July 11, 2023, 08:40:30 AMCopy/paste from Twitter, a tweet posted yesterday. Today's heat index is expected to be above 105F again.
Part of the reason is rainfall being less and much later in the day than usual, with a heat dome of dryer air being parked over Florida, plus ocean temperatures are much higher than normal (upper 90sF).
Yowch! And that water temp!

Just did some reading about the damage done to a number of the farms in my area; in some cases it is really bad!  Crops under feet of water = lost.  Also, there are crop diseases that can render land unusable for years. :'(

Some storms just came through, with lots of rain but little wind. We lost power for about a minute a full half hour before the storm arrived, and had a couple of flickers of the lights before and after, but so far no extended outage. Fingers crossed.

There were (and still are) some flash flood warnings near Middlebury and Rutland. Looking at radar, the severe storms seem to have passed.

My area in NY lucked out again. No high winds, not much rain. Still a couple of small storm cells to go.

[Added] Shouldn't have posted and created a jinx.  :-X  >:(  Thunderstorms most of the night. No flooding, but much higher risk for today and the weekend.
