I was starting to relax a bit, seeing some rain in the forecast this weekend. But this morning the Hughes fire popped up in Castiac, near Santa Clarita, 40 miles North East of here. Extremely unlikely it will get anywhere near here, but we are already being affected by smoke.

:(  Fingers crossed for you and others in the area(s).

Here:  cold (below zero F this morning).

I did my shoveling and sanding/salting earlier--at least you, hopefully, don't need to do any of that yourself?  Maybe a tiny bit around your vehicle?  Not certain how that works.

Hi Kalevala,

It's not as well insulated as I would like. The landlords shovel the walkway to their front porch and the driveway, but never more than is necessary so that their cars don't get stuck in the snow. I shovel the walkways in the backyard and around my car. It's a reasonable arrangement as far as I'm concerned - the rent is the lowest in the area and possibly the lowest for an apartment in the state (excluding live-in arrangements where tenants share facilities - though I know of at least one such arrangement where the owner charges twice as much as I'm paying!).

The main problem now with these extremely cold temps is keeping the pipes from freezing. The cw pipes run through a ground-level storage area that is unheated, and the pipes can freeze if the temp drops much below 0ºC. Yesterday I walked to work in -25ºC cold, after running the LLs' propane-fueled space heater for about 20 minutes, bringing the temp up to about 4ºC in the storage area.

Well, 2 hours later it was down to 0.1ºC, as shown on a website I can monitor at work. I emailed my landlady and asked if their daughter was home, and could she step into my storage area and operate the heater? LL's reply was "I'm on my way", though by the time I received her reply, the temp was already up to 6ºC.

The problem was, it kept going up: 10ºC, 11º, 12º, 13º. Apparently she had just turned it on and left, probably headed back to work (she works at a library in Montpelier). So I had to bail out of a help session, change out of my uniform, and walk back home to turn it off. By the time I had done that, the temp in the storage area had climbed to 14ºC, or upper 50s F.

If you're getting the impression that these people are a little flaky, you understand perfectly. Unfortunately, the alternatives in this area are few and far between, and ALL are MUCH more expensive.

Yes, same here. My weather station recorded a low of -25.2ºC or about -13ºF yesterday morning. Much less harsh this morning - we only got down to a hair below -12ºC (+10ºF). Some spots to our east (northern NH) were still "below zero".

Totaled somewhere between half an inch and an inch. Not insubstantial, but not enough to make up for the very dry start to the rainy season.

Hopefully more will come, though in decent doses. All the best.

Is that good or bad?  As in I don't want to see you flooded.

Tomorrow's forecast: Rain, snow, and sleet before 3pm, then rain and sleet likely between 3pm and 4pm, then a chance of freezing rain after 4pm. High near 34. South wind 6 to 10 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

I managed to run all my pre-winter-storm errands today so that I can stay ensconced indoors tomorrow.

I pray that you don't lose power.  That's the biggest danger with weather like that.

Our power tends to weather well, as there's a fire-house two houses down. But I warmly appreciate the thought!

That sounds Mickey Mouse for Boston honestly.

It's not "snowmageddon," by any means, and it's entirely seasonal. It would just be a nasty day if I had to go out into the weather, which happily I don't.

Oh, boy!  Does it just wash off to the rivers/sea since it's been so dry?  And that's a lot too!

Just up from a nap here; shoveled snow earlier.  And it was hard to get up--the snow--not getting up from a nap (had to use a special ice tool as it was really packed down and pretty cold outside).  More snow forecast soon.  Winter has finally set in.  We're still way behind in rainfall/moisture for this time of year.

Hoping to convince a friend into ordering a pizza tonight (I'd also make a salad; him "Grumble.  Grumble." though he'll eat it.) [He woke me up from my nap; now he's taking one]...so it goes.  :)  I'll check the menus whilst he's sleeping and see if I can convince him later on into joining me.  ;D
