Quote from: JBS on October 07, 2024, 12:27:11 PMThat's a category 1 hurricane.
However because of the latitude it will be called an extra-tropical cyclone.
What are they talking about in terms of possibilities/probabilities in your area JBS?

Not that bad, comparatively speaking.
Depending on where the probability bands map to (it's hard to tell on the NOAA website) a 20% to 50% chance of getting tropical storm force winds, and up to 4 inches of rain on top of the rain we're already getting yesterday and today. The core of the storm will be mid state and landing near Tampa. I'm near Fort Lauderdale.

Quote from: Kalevala on October 07, 2024, 08:59:17 AMFrom what I understand, as of now it is a Cat 5.  Who knows what it will become when it hits land?

News was from recent Weather Channel info (current).

K

I heard later on the news that it was indeed a Cat 5, in fact a very strong Cat 5 with max sustained winds of 180 mph. It has weakened some and is now a Cat 4, last I heard. They think it will undergo "eyewall replacement" and end up as a Cat 3 by landfall, but with a much larger wind field.

Yes, I saw today that it was now a 4.  Hadn't heard of eyewall replacement before.  Will have to look into it.  The mysteries of Mother Nature!

Bad weather: 100 % cloudy. Heavy rain. +9°C (feels +5°C). Wind 12 m/s.  ???

At least I don't live in Florida... ...so there is that!
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Milton is now a Cat 4.  Hearing about a number of tornado watches, etc.  :(

@JBS Are you experiencing any effects of Milton in your area?  I do know that you're on the east coast, but from what I remember hearing, the hurricane will be crossing the state.

I'll be getting some rain and some tropical storm force gusts (but not sustained winds*). The real bad weather will be well north of me. There is a risk of tornadoes.
Most of it will probably be late tonight (Wednesday) or early tomorrow (Thursday).

*sustained winds mean lasting more than one minute. I assume my area will get at least some sustained 30+ mph winds.

Numerous tornadoes reported across the Florida peninsula last night - though most seem to have been on the Atlantic side. Stay safe, Floridians! My acquaintance in New Port Richey went silent around 2100 EDT last night (0100 UTC), shortly after landfall occurred.

Very different weather up here in Vermont, of course: a few breaks of sun, 7ºC, no wind to speak of, 0.5mm of rain so far since midnight. Autumn foliage is around peak now in the valleys and the leaf peepers are out in force!

Earlier today I caught up with my old friend in West Palm, who said there were 112 tornado sightings. He's retired from law enforcement. He spoke of a Sherif's Dept garage, a steel-reinforced concrete structure which got torn away.

Mother Nature always wins... :(

But fortunately, my friend in New Port Richey made out just fine - dodged yet another bullet (the first this year was Helene). Lots of debris in his yard, but no structural damage. They lost power for several hours though.

It was 40 F on my morning walk. Foliage has begun. Fall is in the air here. :)

Kalevala

It's been down into the low to mid 30's here; unusually cold for this time of year here.

We had our first killing frost last night, with a low of -3ºC. But today the temp shot well up into the teens (C, think upper 50s F), and we appear to be in for a very nice stretch of Indian summer weather lasting through the weekend and into next week. Today was pristine and clear, with abundant fall color still lingering: a perfect day for a hike.
