Quote from: DavidW on June 24, 2025, 02:12:14 PMI'm visiting my parents. But I'm flying back tomorrow. My AC has been off for two weeks. It will be hot when I get back!

It was 86 F in my house when I got back in. Well, the AC took care of it quickly.

Quote from: Kalevala on June 25, 2025, 02:53:21 PMWell, my friend and I managed to get his a/c installed today.  Boy, it was hot outside--not as bad as yesterday, but there was still a heat advisory.  That's the good news for the day.

The bad news:  afterwards, we were doing some errands and he received a phone call from his younger sister and was told that their older sister had passed away today.

Very sorry!

Quote from: krummholz on June 26, 2025, 05:03:12 AMWhat AC? Almost no one in Vermont has AC, except in cities like Burlington and Montpelier, and even there, it's mostly window units, not central air. When I move next week into a new place, I am going to try to get a window unit as we are clearly getting dangerous heat now, something unthinkable here even just a few years ago. :(

Oh. It seems climate change will make AC much more commonplace in Vermont.  ::)

Depends on how the electricity to the AC is being produced. Contrary to "popular" belief, wind power doesn't make cancer more commonplace.

Well, you have to figure out how to stay cool.  It's not always easy, particularly as one gets older (and figuring in ones budget).

Yep, no question about that. I've found that local stores are sold out - but the place I'm moving into is owned by a family that also owns a hardware store, and they are ordering two small window A/C units for me.

I assume that was humor - climate change is global. As far as whether we're contributing to a positive feedback loop, my understanding is that most electricity in VT is generated by hydro plants rather than burning fossil fuels - in fact, I think most of it comes from Canada.

Good to hear AC units are coming. In Finland they sell fans at -40 % discount because of the chilly summer.

Yes, I think our climate is a little warmer than yours. In any case, I already have two window fans, but they're pretty useless when the temperature is 35ºC, as it was twice this week.

Mostly tongue in cheek. May not apply in Vermont where energy is mostly renewable, but in the rest of the world where fossil fuels are widely used there is a positive feedback loop, where increased need for air conditioning increases fossil fuel use, creating more warming.
