Thanks, K. It's still bad today, but expected to improve markedly by tomorrow.

Beautiful weather today. I needed groceries so I walked to the market, ten minutes of welcome exercise.

We're under a tsunami advisory due to the Kamchatka earthquake a few hours ago. It shouldn't really amount to anything here, but whatever is going to happen will start in about five hours as I post this.

Sending positive thoughts to Kamchatka, 8.6 is bad news no matter where you are.

I read somewhere reliable that tsunami waves of about 1ft (0.3 m) are likely in California. The expected arrival time, 1am. Corresponds to high tide, do it might not be insignificant.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

I don't expect anything very significant to happen in the Bay Area, probably a few extra inches of high tide. But, I'm no expert so we'll see.

According to the LA times 5 ft is expected in crescent city, 3 ft in Port San Luis and 1 ft in LA.

The NWS predicts first tsunami effects to arrive at 0040 tomorrow morning, not quite three hours from this posting.

It would make since for Crescent City to have a bit more action as it is far to the north in California.

3 ft. in San Luis Obispo and 1 ft. in LA seems a bit much, but again I'm no expert.

Watching some of the Rogers Cup (big tennis event in both Montreal and Toronto).  Towards the end of one match, they showed the sunset/twilight skies in Toronto; boy, you could really see the smoke haze from the wildfires.  Air quality is also lousy in my area.   :(

Yes, it's pretty terrible here as well. There were air quality alerts for the past three days and Code Red or high-end Code Orange conditions nearly everywhere. NWS has stopped issuing the alerts for some reason,, even though the smoke is STILL quite bad throughout the area.

I looked at the NWS website and put in Middlebury as area.  Clicked on "air quality" and it showed it in the yellow/moderate area.  Perhaps they only put warnings in when in goes into the orange area?  Didn't pay the closest of attention to today's forecast here this morning, but I did here about it improving--at least for the time being.

p.s.  How are you enjoying your new place?  Have things settled down and improved?

Ignore the forecasts - they're totally unmoored from reality. Check current conditions on EPA's AirNow site or on PurpleAir.com, which has an interactive map that shows current readings and 10-minute averages for the dozens of reporting sites in the area. As I type this, all the sites in north central and western VT - and well into the 'Dacks in NY - are reporting Code Orange, 101-150 for AQI values. There are a tiny smattering of sites reporting yellow and one reporting green - I suspect they're either indoors or misconfigured.

I think NWS is suffering from "smoke fatigue", at least in the local (Burlington) office - they're just not saying anything about it because it's same old, same old - at least it isn't worse than the last few days, it just isn't any better.

The new flat is actually quite nice except for an infestation of tiny vinegar flies, the kind that like to hitch rides on ripe fruit. There are at least two dozen swarming around the kitchen and living room, which are not separated by any wall. Some were already here as I was moving in - I think they were brought in by the work crew that was renovating the flat in June - but they've apparently bred since then.
