So I'm in the market for a camera in the $100-$200 range.  Does anyone have any recs for a camera in this price range?  Are there things to look out for that make the camera better or things that should be avoided?

Thanks all,

Allan

I cannot offer any help except to let you know that the November 2007 issue of Consumer Reports has an article on digital cameras.   :)

In this price range, there is not much that can be said in favor of one model over another in terms of image quality. I think if you stick to Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Sony, or even Kodak or HP, you'll be OK. Features like water resistance, size, color, appearance are the main considerations of buyers of such cameras. Small cameras have small sensors which produce very noisy images in anything other than bright, outdoor light. Flashes on these cameras are not good for anything exceeding 10 feet. If you just want snaps of your family, friends, and vacation photos, you should be OK. Resolution for such cameras really doesn't make a whole lot of difference. 5MP is more than adequate for viewing onscreen or making small prints. If someone tries to tell you you should buy camera A over camera B because it has 8 MP (or even 10) instead of 6, consider it bullshit.

In addition to reading reviews, you should go to a camera store and try out the cameras you're considering. See how they feel in your hand. This is a much overlooked, but very important consideration.
