That kind of reminds me how, when I was younger, I would look for classical music on popular peer-to-peer networks and find atrocities such as :

"Vampire Dracula Frankenstein Phantom of the Opera spooky organ theme"  (Toccata and Fugue in D minor, of course)

What's wrong with that?  ;)

Marcel

I don't have:

6. Pachelbel: Canon in D
11. Handel: Messiah
23. Schubert: The Trout Quintet
24. Saint-Saens: Symphony No.3 (Organ)
25. Copland: Appalachian Spring

rubio

These are lacking:

6. Pachelbel: Canon in D
19. Smetana: The Moldau
21. Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture
25. Copland: Appalachian Spring

"One good thing about music, when it hits- you feel no pain" Bob Marley

I own recordings (in many instances, more than one) of everything except 'The Nutcracker' ... perhaps surprisingly for someone who loves Tchaikovsky.

I have all 100.  Where do I go to collect my prize?

That reminds me, I saw the Nutcracker performed last Friday (ah, Holiday traditions). I didn't know it was scored for Orchestra and crying babies, screaming children and applause as a percussion instrument.

Aha. A slight revision - I was talking about the top 25 - as displayed, not having spotted the link. From the top one hundred I don't have these...

42. Massenet: Meditation from "Thais"
48. Mendelssohn: Symphony No.4 (Italian)
51. Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf
53. Haydn: Trumpet Concerto
58. Tchaikovsky: Serenade for Strings
61. Saint-Saens: Carnival of the Animals
65. Bach: Anna Magdalena Bach Book Excerpts
77. Tchaikovsky: Symphony No.5
78. Elgar: Enigma Variations
90. Respighi: The Pines and Fountains of Rome
91. Berlioz: Harold in Italy
95. Mendelssohn: Symphony No.3 (Scottish)

88 out of 100. Does that make me a popularist?

Great!  There's a beach called "Tingley Beach" right here in Albuquerque.  I'll be there at 4PM - no clothing please.

I think the tie-breaker is: Who has more recordings of the Pachelbel Canon?

http://theclassicalstation.org/top100.shtml

1. Beethoven: Symphony No.9 (Ode to Joy)
2. Beethoven: Symphony No.5
7. Beethoven: Symphony No.6 (Pastoral)
9. Mozart: Symphony #41 (Jupiter)
10. Mussorgsky/Ravel: Pictures at an Exhibition
11. Handel: Messiah
12. Beethoven: Piano Concerto No.5 (Emperor)
15. Handel: Water Music
16. Mozart: Requiem
20. Mozart: Piano Concerto No.21 (Elvira Madigan)

I own all the Beethoven, Mozart, Bach & Handel as well as the Nutcracker but none of the others

Hm. I'm guessing Harry.

I'll probably lose.  I only have one or two versions at most - can't stand listening to it these days.

But the thread theme is "NOT own a recording of" . . . so the one with fewer recordings of the Pachelbel takes the laurel.

I have a horrible CD featuring 15 versions of the cheesy Canon played in different styles and by various instruments. There's one of James Galway pulling off an interpretation as much vibrato as he can... I've never been able to sit through it.

I've probably only got two or three.

A lot of the shorter pieces on the list, such as the Pachelbel, turn up on samplers and the dreaded "best of..." compilations. To my eternal credit, I only have a couple of those, hence few copies of some of those old "chestnuts".

That would be a horrible CD, although it could be used for torture of captured terrorists.
