Hi,

I am going to order the Kondrashin/Shostakovich and the Sinopoli/Dresden/Schumann from hmv.co.jp.

Are there anything else worth getting there that is not readily available in the United States that you guys recommend?

Thanks.

That's where I found some of the Concertgebouw Anthology boxes (all live performances) if any of those are interesting to you.  The box covering 1960-1970 has Kondrashin doing Shostakovich's 6th Symphony, and although I thought it was OOP, I see Amazon has it for $195.  But I think HMV Japan is cheaper.

Thanks Bruce, not really into anthologies unless they are NY Philharmonic or Philadelphia Orchestra special editions I am afraid :)

I also see the Chailly/Schumann/Mahler arrangement there for a pretty good price.

This is what I would get:  Bruckner - Symphony No. 8 (Giulini/VPO)

At the current exchange rate, 2,000 Yen = $17.82 USD, which is quite a bargain.  An ArkivCD from ArkivMusic.com is $27.98.

I have this one:

I think they are the same recording. Maybe not?

Yes, I believe they are the same, but the version you have is out of print (which is why I want the one from HMV Japan).  :(

get Kondrashin's live Tchaikovsky 6 from Japan. Amazing interpretation and playing, particularly the finale.

Do you want piano recommendations?

They are. The original release looked like this:

In my opinion, one of the greatest documents of music making on record.

Some items I have on my hmv Japan wishlist:

DVDs

I went to that concert, so I have to have the DVD!

CDs

With the Leningrad Philharmonic (yes, that is Mariss Jansons' father)

Not the same recording as on Supraphon, this was made in the 90s by Exton. They also recorded 1,2,4,5,6,9.

my two favourite performances of the work.

If you're interested in more Shostakovich, Kondrashin's 8th is bigger and wilder than his Melodiya recording.

One word about the discs mentioned above -- anything recorded in Tokyo's Bunka Kaikan has a rather hollow sound, and when the timpani come in they just about take your ears off.

I don't know what sort of piano music you like. IMO the Sofronitsky disc of Schumann/Chopin is essential

I'd take a look at the Munch and Ormandy series on BMG Japan.  There are also some nice Previn reissues, e.g. his Walton and Nielsen first symphonies.  To find BMG Japan issues, search on catalog number prefix BVCC in the advanced search.

To search on Univeral Japan issues, use the catalog prefixes UCCG (DG), UCCP (Philips), and UCCD (Decca).  Lots of hard to find Bohm, Monteux, Kubelik, etc.

For Sony Japan, try SRCR.

For EMI, TOCE.  I highly recommend Schuricht's Bruckner 9, for example.

Denon Crest is also worthwhile searching.

The Naito Bruckner series is very interesing.

HMV Japan has a lot of titles not available stateside.  Some Giulini DG LvB recordings for instance, the last couple volumes of Michel Beroff's Denon Debussy cycle, three LvB sonata cycles not available here (Sako, Shimizu [almost complete], Nakamichi), some recent-ish Eric Heidsieck recordings, some Furtwangler and Mravinsky reissues that I can't find elsewhere.  It's a treasure trove.  I have to be careful buying from them.

Indeed, I also find the Naito recordings fascinating, but, you don't have to order from HMV to get a good deal, i mean they sell each recording for an equalvalent price of about 23 U.S dollars, while you can get all of them for 20 dollars from Berkey's website.
